Zig Zag Socks : Next Project - 1 June 2024

There's absolutely nothing wrong with this yarn, but I was rather disappointed after I bought it.

Exhibit A : 'suitable for socks'

I went to a big shop that sells all sorts of things including yarn. After going to check the summer sandals and deciding that they wouldn't be that comfortable I went to check out the yarn.

A lot of the yarn on display was priced at £1.99 which is very, very cheap even if it's just acrylic. I've bought some of that in the past so I know the quality. I was very tempted by what there was just round the corner though : baskets with variegated yarn at different prices. Some of the yarn was the usual price, some was £2.99, some £3.99, and some apparently was £5.99. Any guesses what I picked up ?

I got to the till and it rang : £5.99. I couldn't believe my eyes. I went to check again but sadly it was correct though not at all clearly visible. I don't like making a fuss so that was a lesson I will not forget. I get so disappointed because I can't really afford expensive yarn. Then suddenly I read the label :

Exhibit B : Good reasons.

As you can see I had actually bought yarn that wasn't just 'plastic' but 100g of 75% proper wool. The 25% nylon is from what I've learnt the right amount of 'man-made' fibre to give the yarn durability considering the wear and tear of a sock.

That was a relief considering that with 100g I can easily make a pair of socks and have some left to add some interest to another pair of socks. This reduces the price of the home-made items.

When I got home I went online to compare the price of the yarn in other places and it was a bit cheaper than here or here. So I'm feeling a bit happier after seeing that where I bought it it was a big cheaper.

Another good point is that I've found that there is a free pattern to knit a pair of socks here using this yarn.

I'm now looking forward to starting this new project well in time for the autumn.

Thank you for reading !
