Airbnb Gets More Serious About China With Tech Investments

Airbnb Inc. is ramping up its investment in China, quadrupling its engineering team over the next 12 months to focus on affluent millennials who’re increasingly exploring the world’s second largest economy.

Airbnb will grow its technical cohort to more than 100 in Beijing — the only office outside the U.S. where the home-sharing giant employs an engineering division, according to co-founder Nathan Blecharczyk. Customers are Finding New Ways to Find and Book the Perfect Vacation Rental

Many travelers have grown accustomed to finding vacation rentals by going directly to sites like Airbnb, HomeAway and VRBO. But these days you can find and book a rental halfway around the world in ways you may not have considered, or even know about: on traditional hotel and airfare booking websites like Expedia and Hotels.com, through the hotel review (and now booking) site TripAdvisor or even in Google search.

Let’s begin with Google search. If you’ve used it lately to find a hotel, you may have been given the option to filter those results for vacation rentals. In July, Skift, a travel news and analysis site, reported that Google was testing a vacation-rental filter and, indeed, you’ll find that it’s available in certain cities.

Priceline Is Making a Land Grab on Airbnb’s Turf by Adding Rental Inventory

Priceline Group chief executive Glenn Fogel says he’s eager for his company to catch up to online travel competitors in volumes for vacation homes and apartment rentals.

While Fogel didn’t name any names, it’s safe to assume that the top competitor in his mind is Airbnb, the largest online player in home and apartment rental reservations today. Airbnb has more than 3 million listings.

Priceline Group executives, speaking during the company’s second quarter earnings call Tuesday, touted the growth in home-rental inventory at its largest brand, Booking.com.
