3 Ways To Build An Ethical Business Culture

in #business8 years ago (edited)

Have you ever wondered if an ethical business culture would be easy to build? It seems these days that there is either unethical business practices or unethical employers.

Ethics seem to be a lost art along with good communication, good listening, and above all building relationships. Ethics continue to deteriorate in many areas of business, but you can be the change that you want to see.

You can choose to be different. You can choose to run your business with ethics. Today, I'll share with you 3 ways that you can build an ethical business culture that you can be proud of.

An Ethical Business Culture Can Build Morale

If you are a business owner and you know that you are doing things that are unethical, you have a problem. You are not only promoting poor behaviors, but you are also creating an atmosphere for employees to follow an example that exemplifies greed and a lack of respect for others.

If you want to build and ethical business you should do the following.

  1. Set expectations and make them clear. Any expectations you set should be crystal clear. If they are not, you are the problem. It all starts at the top, so everything you expect to see in your business should stem from an example you set. Write down your expectations so you can have them out in black and white for all to see.
  2. Always enforce your rules and/or policies. There is a joke that rules wer made to be broken. Not so fast. When you make rules and write policies, you need to make sure that you enforce them. If you don't, you cannot expect employees to follow them. Do not enforce them for certain people. Everyone should be held to the same accountability.
  3. Walk the talk. If you don't set the example, you'll see no employee living out your rules with regards to ethics. You also won't see anyone upholding your policies if you don't do the same. It all starts with you. Before you can enforce them, you should be the one to make sure that you are following what you created. Lead by example.

Leaders are ethical and you won't see it any other way. You may hear some folks say that they are leaders in their industry, but if they operate in an unethical fashion it isn't true.

Remember, ethics is also about consistency. This means that you must be the same all the time, whether this is in regards to you being the example or reprimanding employees for not following the rules.

It won't always be easy for you to be on your best behavior, but the payoff is huge if you want to build and ethical business culture.

Standards and rules need to be adhered to across the board, in a consistent matter, or else hypocrisy rules and no equity is sustained. Logic, consistency, non-contradiction, the foundation for order everywhere.

Take care. Peace.
