Tips On Managing Bad Managers In Your Company.

in #business6 years ago

If you run a fairly big business, you may divide it into functional or geographical teams in pursuit of a certain strategy and these teams will be led by managers appointed by you. As an entrepreneur, you must really choose the people who will manage these teams carefully, otherwise, their subordinates will be despondent and they will not enjoy their work. Bad leadership will negatively affect employee morale and motivation leading to a reduction in engagement and productivity.
As a business owner, you must be especially wary of three types of bad managers which I will discuss below.

Manager With Skills Deficit
This type of manager is very willing to do his or her job but they lack the necessary skills to lead and motivate a team. They just do not know how to handle the situation and the pressure that comes with it.
Usually, under such circumstances, adequate training can remedy the situation. After the training, the manager must be given adequate support to fully implement what he or she would have learnt in the training sessions.

Manager Without Motivation
This type of manager has serious engagement issues. He or she does not want to do his job. He or she requires a significant push in order to do the job.
It is also important such a manager be made aware of the impact of their conduct. Have a frank and factual discussion about the impact of their conduct on the team. At the same time, you must try to unearth the causes of his or her lack of engagement.
Depending on the discussion and the investigations you carry out, it may also be necessary to offer training to facilitate the adoption of a new set of behaviours.
At the end of it all, the manager must commit to new behaviours. Make him or her fully appreciate how new behaviours will make his or her life and that of the team much easier.

Manager Who Does Not Care
This type of manager is skilled and knows how to do his or her job but the challenge is that he or she does not care what other people think or how they feel. He or she does not give much thought to the way he or she talks to people. He or she just fires away without restraint. The major problem here is an abrasive personality. Usually, they are two possibilities with such a person. These are
(i) They may not really appreciate the impact of the actions or
(ii) They know the impact of their behaviour and still they do not care.
Here you again to have a frank discussion about the impact of their behaviour on the morale of the team and the work environment. Training is then offered to assist them to adjust their approach. In this case, training has a much better chance of success if option (i) is applicable.

As a conclusion, I will mention that as the entrepreneur, you are ultimately responsible for the morale of all employees and hence you must have mechanisms in place to deal with bad managers. There are also cases where your intervention and training may not yield the desired results. You must be bold enough to show the respective manager the door before they cause irreparable damage.
