Why the Willow Tree Figurines have no Faces?
Have you seen one of these before? Or maybe you have one in your home? Do you know why these little figurative sculptures have no face? Well, I got curious myself so let's find the answer.
Artist Susan Lordi made this lovely figures which called "Willow Tree". An original hand carvings from her studio in Kansas City Missouri.
Willow Tree is cast from her original carvings and individually painted by hand. This Willow Tree after carving will then be sent to Demdaco in China. Susan Lordi has worked in partnership with DEMDACO since 1999.
Under the figurine, you will see this mark,
And at the side is the ©LORDI and the year it was made.
Susan Lordi said,
”I've always been interested in oral history and the passing down of stories from one generation to the next. I think learning from those who came before helps define who we are—it grounds us. Their story is our story.”
And the reason why her works have no face is for the viewer to decide its meaning. To make it more personal and the willow trees interpretation is open. She wants you to make a connection to it, your way.
My favourite one is the "Surrounded by Love" It is so simple and special. I love every detail of it.
There are lots of figurines to choose from and I'm sure you will like it too. They have everything for any occasion.

Unique topic...very unique workmanship. I think the empty faces do leave room for personal interpretation.
