No Music, No Life?
According to dictionary.com, music is an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony and color.
Now, we understand that music is an art because it is an expression of our skills, ideas and emotions. Oscar wilde in his essay “The Decay of Lying” says “Life imitates art more than art imitates life”. Wilde holds that anti-mimesis results not merely from life’s imitative instinct but from the fact that the self-conscious aim of life is to find expression and that art offers it certain beautiful forms through which it may realize that energy.
Musicologists say that a society’s music is influenced by varying aspects of that culture and we know that culture is the way of life of a people. So, if culture is a function of life and music a function of culture, we can then say that music is a function of life.
Benefits of Music in Our Lives
Health: “Music is Life” that’s why our hearts has beats. I recently saw that line somewhere and it really gave me interest though it’s kind of funny. It has been proven that listening to music lowers blood pressure, slows the pulse and heart rate and decreases the level of stress hormones. Listening to music can distract us from our troubles. Creating music can improve mood and reduce burnout in individuals in high-stress situations. Therapists recognize the soothing nature of music. A new discipline called “music therapy” uses music to help individuals accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic environment.
Meditation: Yoga and other forms of meditation can be accompanied by music to help the mind from wandering during exercises that require focus. Not all music is an appropriate to meditation but many forms of music initiate the relaxation response and help the mind slow down. Gentle music, often with a familiar melody, can be comforting and aid the meditation process. Each person must search to find the music that produces the sense of centeredness, familiarity and calm for his/her own meditations.
Impact in the Society: Music from legends like Michael Jackson is a unifying point for deeply divided society. Music carries deep and inspiring messages. Take a song like “We the world” by Michael Jackson. The song greatly influenced societies having issues to come at peace. Music preaches! It brings unity!!
Joy and Happiness: Wherever there’s music, there’s life. Music is often the best way to express happiness or joy over something you can’t stop smiling about. When some songs come up, dancing is irresistible. Songs like “Happy by Pharrell Williams” and “I feel good by James Brown” are songs that normally cause a happy feeling in us.
We are here to create and live our lives in a way that honors our authentic nature and our highest potential and we are also here to play, express and to make art (music) that will embody the mysteries of life, the truth of who we are and the simple joy of creating.
Why not forget about your troubles and listen, play or create music that is the best medicine to all ailments?
