I end up reading an article written by a nazi survivor in I want to say Poland, but Im probably wrong on the country.

She talks about how Hitler didnt take over the country by force but was voted into power. He did this by slowly taking control of all the work, companies, schools, etc telling the people how to live ans to give up there guns for a better life.

She talks about how once everyone realized what Hitler was doing it was too late because they had given up all there freedom. They had no way to defend themselves from the evil they so happily embraced with open arms.

As you said it was a comfortable change that happened not something all at once to keep them unaware.
