Pain makes man think
John Patrick

When we are going through difficult circumstances, it is normal for us to feel alone, sad, angry and even helpless. In some cases, we complain and ask God to allow that bitter drink to pass quickly. However, we must recognize that thanks to these adverse situations we achieve benefits for our life and for the life of all those around us that we would not achieve in any other way.

The Greek playwright Aristophanes once said:

In adversity, virtue comes to light.
Particularly I consider that such statement is totally true and then I list some reasons:

• When we have gone through the storm, we know how to recognize when calm arrives
• When we have been enveloped by pain, we glimpse it in the pupils of others, to the point of being able to understand and support them.
• When we face the inconveniences, there is a part within ourselves that wakes up to guide us, to offer us the solutions we need at that moment.
• When we go through misery, we develop empathy and a high sensitivity, we are willing to embrace the one who suffers and cry with the one who cries.
• When we manage to overcome the calamity, we strengthen the character (if we study the lives of great men and women in history we will be surprised that everyone forged his character in the moments of greatest difficulty)

Now, how can we take advantage of adversity in times of anguish?

Dr. Steve Stephens, a graduate in psychology, writer and family therapist, recommends the following:
Understand: Avoid judging yourself by the feelings you have at that moment, we are human and as such, it is normal for us to experience feelings of anger, sadness or frustration.
• Feel: to feel is to heal, to deny or hide feelings will only make our wounds last, so it is necessary to let them come to the surface.
• Pause: Anger reduces the flow of oxygen to the brain and then we can not think clearly, so: take air, breathe deeply and let the energy that boils in you, come out as you exhale ...
• Think: once you are calm ask yourself what are the valuable lessons I can draw from this situation? How can I use this learning in my favor? How can my wounds be stronger?
• Act: There will always be problems but life goes on. Either we go ahead with it, or we revive it by concentrating more and more on the difficulties. We all have to ask ourselves: do I live life in the rearview mirror or with my eyes attentive to the road ahead?

There is a great lesson behind all great adversity; for this reason: we learn to be willing to discover it, to open our hearts to listen to ourselves, to feel our humanity, to approach God in search of consolation, to have patience to endure, maturity to grow and character to transform something terribly difficult into a impulse to be better and better ...

It is not in the calm of life or in the repose of a peaceful station where great characters are formed. The habits of a vigorous mind are formed when facing difficulties.

useful for you!

I wait for you in my next post!

Success and Blessings for you!

Sort:

I like to think of them as "contrasts" rather than 'difficulties'. Some really valuable insights here. I want to reorder your 5 points though: 1. PAUSE. 2. FEEL. 3. UNDERSTAND. 4. THINK. 5. ACT - or choose not to. :) It always, always needs to start with the pause, IMHO.
