CREATING A camera that can see hidden around the corner OBJECTS

in #camera8 years ago

The amazing technology that allows literally look around the corner, not looking out for it, was invented at MIT in 2012. technology creator Andreas Velten pretty quickly faced with the problem of funding their research, making the development of unusual laser chamber was suspended. However, he came to the aid of the US military agency DARPA. They have invested in the invention is 4.4 million dollars, which allowed to continue the work of Andreas.

On the creation of the camera, the ability to see the hidden objects from its lens now employs a team of scientists from the Research Institute Morgridzhskogo. Of course, all research is under the direction of Andreas Welt. WELT idea was simple enough, but at the same time is difficult implemented technically. The camera emits a laser impulse which is reflected from the different surfaces and objects in its path. Some individual photons reach the camera's lens, and then comes in the algorithm, collecting scraps of information obtained from these photons in a three-dimensional image of what is around the corner.

The camera captures an image every 2 picoseconds (1 picosecond - a trillionth of a second), so that the distance traveled by the photons can be measured with incredible precision. Additional funds received from the military, will be spent on the improvement of technology, the increase in detail generated by the algorithm of 3D-objects and reduction of the camera, which is not dare to call compact. Of course, the speed of its operation also leaves much to be desired because of the fact to form an image of invisible objects currently takes a few minutes. Scientists plan to reduce this time to 10 seconds. Himself Andreas Velten says that after four years, the camera will go into service of the American army.
