For the first time in a long time, we could see hemp freed from its bonds and allowed to be legally produced and cultivated in United States.

The Hemp Farming Act of 2018, written by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, aims to establish hemp as an agricultural commidity, be given the rights to Federal Crop Insurance, allowed much needed research and be protected under the State. It also clearly states that those wonderful hemp derived CBD oils are in fact very much a hemp product and therefore would be completely legal as well.

“The term ‘hemp’ means the plant Cannabis sativa L. and any part of that plant, including the seeds thereof and all derivatives, extracts, cannabinoids, isomers, acids, salts and salts of isomers, whether growing or not, with a delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol concentration of not more than 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis.”

This gives a clearer picture as to what is considered legal or not and it makes it blatantly obvious that any and all parts of the hemp plant will be covered under the bill. This is such a progressive step forward by our federal government and shows that even though progress takes time, it can happen.

The Hemp Farming Act of 2018 was co-introduced by Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore.

“By legalizing hemp and empowering states to conduct their own oversight plans, we can give the hemp industry the tools necessary to create jobs and new opportunities for farmers and manufacturers around the country,” McConnell, R-Ky., said in a statement.

Hemp has long been picked apart buy our legal system making it very difficult to use certain parts and products of the hemp plant. If this bill passes it stands to provide a clear cut, state governed hemp production law that will indeed provide a much needed reprieve from our standard American farm commodities.
