Weekly Weakly Weed Use

After using marijuana daily for a few years, I’ve come to discover that weed works better for me weekly rather than daily. With daily use it becomes a habit, automatic, not special because it is expected. With weekly (or longer) intervals, cannabis use becomes a sort of ritual, more special, an event.

Often you start to sleepwalk through life, acting on autopilot. The occasional use of cannabis can serve as a wakeup call to remind yourself to be more conscious, really pay attention. But with daily use, being high on cannabis can become a form of autopilot sleepwalking itself. It can take a full 24 hours (or more) for marijuana to fully flush from your system, so even though you’re not “high” the next morning, you’re still in a sort of post-high haze. A week (or longer) gives your body and mind time to reset, get back to normal, so you can reap the full benefits of getting high the next time.

Plus daily marijuana use stops you from dreaming. Being high on cannabis is sort of like a waking dream, but actual REM dreams are vital. By limiting cannabis use to once a week, you can enjoy both worlds of sleeping dreams and waking cannabis dreams.

I currently don’t have a specific time or date to use cannabis, it’s just roughly once a week, sometimes two or three weeks go by without use, and other times I’ll use it two or three times in a week. I also take lower doses than I did when using daily and balance THC with CBD. I don’t need to get super-high and zone out. With a lower dose, I get high but still remain locked in and focused, in control mentally.

Cannabis for me becomes an idea machine. Tons of thoughts and ideas come to me rapidly—fictional story ideas, ideas for songs, or philosophical insights about myself or society. I write these ideas down as they come to me, taking copious notes. Then the next day I try to make sense of and organize the notes—which can end up taking most of the day.

For me, that was a problem with daily cannabis use. I’d get so many new creative ideas while high every night, but I had no time to actually follow through on any of them. (Or at least not enough time to follow through on all of them.)

Using cannabis once a week, I may get a week’s worth of ideas in a single day, so I’ll have sufficient time to follow through on each idea. Then, the next week I can get high again and refuel the idea machine. This is what I’ve found to work for me, at least—for now. Your mileage may vary.
