Hiking the Lions Head Full Moon
Along with the epic beauty of Table Mountain comes Lions Head which is on the Table Mountain Range and is a much shorter and easier hike than its big brother Table Mountain. The peak is obviously much smaller but is a far better road traveled to instant gratification with a view to absolutely die for, especially on one of Cape Town’s intensely amazing full moons.
The entire experience of hiking up Lions head will find you viewing a vista that is big bright, magical and unforgettable. It has become a favorite pastime amongst the local capetonians to take part in this extraordinary and memorable event. Many people go in groups and it is definitely not advised to go alone, not that the peak has any dangerous elements, but one can never predict the slip of a foot and besides a friend viewing the magic from the peak is always more magnificent.
When climbing the remarkable Lions Head, it’s a good idea to take along a good flashlight with extra batteries just in case, more than enough water – better to have to much water than too little, and a snack or ten. Make sure you wear a good pair of hiking shoes or comfortable tackies, Lions Head is not to be hiked in heels. Most nights in Cape Town can become a little chilly and so wearing a warm jacket is definitely advised, sometimes taking with a spare jersey is also a good idea.
Hiking Lions Head in the day is something of a phenomenal experience as the peak provides a brilliant reward for climbing all the way to the peak, the most thrilling panoramic view of Cape Town, however on the night of a full moon with everyone gathering on the peak, out of breath not only from the climb which, although not that intense does have a few chains and ropes that one must be able to conquer to scramble up to the top, but also out of breath from the sheer magnitude of the stupendously wondrous view that boasts a full moon lit city and sea scape which unless you have experienced this first hand, cannot be fathomed.
So next time you wonder what to do around the full moon, dig out your rucksack, fill it with yummy goodies, slip on your best boots and a warm hoodie and grab the hand of a warmly dressed friend and take an epic memorable hike up to heaven.
