Engine Series: #1 The almighty Toyota 2JZ

As we know the engine is the hearth of every car, however exits a lot of important elements that makes the engines works properly, but the engines as it's keeps being the most important thing.

One of the main reasons why I love Japanese cars is because of their engines, the engines of Japanese cars are completely different from those of other car models such as German BMWs or US Fords.
Japanese engines are engines that work in a very "refined " way and that can usually be powered quite well, as there are multiple ways to get aftermarket parts to power them, strengthen them and get the power that the owner wants.

In this case we are going to talk about Toyota's 2JZ engine series and all its variants, as it is one of the "iconic" engines of the Japanese sports cars of the 1990s.

Why is this engine famous?


This engine is usually mentioned because it was one of the engines mounted on the latest generation Toyota Supra "atomic" engines, such as the one Paul Walker was driving on Fast & Furios. But the 2JZ engine (especially its 2JZ-GTE variant) was much more, it got the reputation of being a powerful and robust engine because it really was, met and meets the expectations of any power project and is used for SWAP in a common way, especially in rear-wheel drive cars, since for all-wheel drive cars usually used the RB26DETT of the Nissan Skyline GTR34, another great engine. (I will talk about this one in coming posts of the series)

Something that very few lovers of this engine know, is that it is a very balanced engine, an engine where 3 cylinders move backwards that the other 3 to get an engine block with a simply perfect performance.

Specific data


  • 6 cylinders in line.
  • 24 valves (4 valves per cylinder).
  • Cylinders of 86 mm diameter.
  • The stroke of the cylinders is 86mm.
  • Toyota's VVT-i technology was used from 1998 onwards.

The 2JZ engine had a total of 3 variants that were ridden on different Toyota models:

  • 2JZ-GE Engine: This is the most common version of the 2JZ engine, it is completely atmospheric and can deliver 230 horsepower and 298 Nm of torque. It was ridden on some Toyota Supra, also on the Lexus IS300 and SC300, as well as on the Toyota Soarer and some other cars, as it was the most popular variant.
  • 2JZ-GTE Engine: It is the most beastly version, a 6-cylinder BITURBO engine that could offer 320 horsepower (279 horsepower in the Japanese market) and 451 Nm of torque. Cast iron block and aluminum cylinder head form a simply perfect engine for any SWAP, although it was originally mounted on the Toyota Aristo V (Japan only) and the Toyota Supra Turbo.
  • 2JZ-FSE Engine: It is a little used engine, an atmospheric engine that uses direct injection and a fairly high compression ratio (11.3:1). It uses only automatic gearboxes and offers 217 horsepower and 294 Nm of torque. Despite the existence of 3 variants, the real protagonist is the 2JZ-GTE variant, as it is a perfectly balanced inline 6-cylinder engine, ready to increase speed without excessive wear.

Theoretically, the 2JZ block can withstand up to 2,000 horsepower, although this requires replacing some engine components such as bushings with forged elements, other elements such as the crankshaft are standard forged, so they could perfectly withstand the strengthening.

Happily, I can say that I own a toyota supra Mk4 with a 2Jz-GTE engine created and modified by me in my own workshop.
