Today. March 23, 2018 holiday - World Meteorological Day

in #celebration6 years ago

On March 23, 1950, the Convention of the World Meteorological Organization, in which the formation of the Organization was proclaimed, entered into force. The motto of the holiday was the words: "Weather, climate and water in the information age". And the holiday itself has been celebrated since 1961.

First of all, the World Meteorological Organization deals with weather, climate and water issues, and the countries that are part of it have been successfully cooperating for many years, exchanging operational data on the state of the atmosphere, land, seas, oceans, rivers, on the basis of which weather forecasts are compiled and warnings about dangerous hydrometeorological phenomena. Among the most significant achievements of WMO is the creation of a world climate research program and the creation of a World Weather Watch.

The main activity of WMO is to support countries in providing meteorological and hydrological services. And the World Meteorological Day itself is held to raise awareness of the possible consequences of climate change to the general public. Indeed, today, rapid climate change is one of the most serious environmental problems that humanity faces. This is manifested not only in changing weather conditions, rising / falling temperatures, but also can lead to devastating disasters such as floods, droughts, tsunamis, etc.

The statistics accumulated over the past decade eloquently show that more than 80% of all natural disasters are of meteorological or hydrological origin.

Therefore, every year this Day is dedicated to a topic and appropriate propaganda activities are conducted. So, in different years it was held under the slogans: "Our future climate", "Weather, climate, water and sustainable development", "Hazard Prevention and Mitigation of Natural Disasters", "Polar meteorology: understanding global impacts", "Observations of our a planet for a better future "," Weather, climate and water - the driving force of our future "," Understanding the clouds "and others.
