Kawah Ijen is one of the most incredible volcanoes in the world. Especially because of the color of the lava that it expels when it erupts. At first glance it's like a bright electric blue, as if it were from another planet. Why is the lava of this volcano blue?

We must clarify that the color of lava is not blue, a color quite unusual for a volcano. The blue glow is due to the combustion of sulfuric gases that come into contact with air at temperatures above 360 ° C.

The lava of this volcano - molten tree that is detached from the Earth at high temperatures - is not a different color to the lava of other volcanoes, which differ according to their mineral composition, although they are always red or orange bright in its molten state. However, the Kawah Ijen volcano expels, in addition to lava, high amounts of sulfuric gases at a high pressure and at an extremely high temperature, sometimes reaching 600 ° C.

So once the sulfur is exposed to the oxygen present in the air it is easily ignited, and we see the beautiful effect of a bright blue lava.
