The First Open Source, Physically Secure ComputersteemCreated with Sketch.

We often see some special devices with self destruct feature in order to protect the data in spy movie. This type of device finally coming to reality. A PC with a self-destruct feature is going to launch in upcoming August. If anyone wants to tamper with this PC, it will automatically erase all data on the machine, it basically the world's safest computer.

It is a small flying saucer-shaped computer called Orwl. It is designed in the consideration physical security. Physical security is very important, because once someone get a way to access your computer from the physical, then it’s over.

Of course, self-destruction is just one of many of security features in Orwl. From the appearance point of view, it has a very compact disc shaped structure, easy to hold in hand. Most importantly, this PC included tons of security facility, designed to protect the data. In fact, just to boot up the PC, you will need your two-factor authentication, providing physical key and then enter the password. But that's just a small part of security measures, there will be a deeper security after the startup of the PC.

Each Orwl PC has a unique key ring, this unique key ring uses Near Field Communication (NFC) to interact with the system. If you carry this key, in you are away from the PC for 10 meters, it will lock itself, then the processor will enter sleep state. You will not able to access the USB port and HDMI port. In the locked state, the intruder can not load malware or extract data.

Of course, if you are a thief and decided to steal the confidential information in the PC, you will definitely try to open the computer by breaking down the physical hard drive. This is where the self-destruct feature comes in. This PC equipped with a series of sensors, even if it’s not connected with the power supply, it is smart enough to detect when someone is using the Orwl without authorized permission. Once detected someone demolitioning the physical hard drive, it will permanently delete its internal self-encrypting Intel SSD, and self-destruct to protect the data.

Although the size is quite small, but this Orwl PC is not cheap. Depending on the model, its price from $ 1699 to $ 4299. The user can select Windows / Ubuntu / Qubes several operating systems.

These Orwl are equipped with Intel Core m7 Skylake processor (up to 1.2GHz), Intel HD Graphics 515 300/1000MHz, Up to 8GB LPDD3 @ 1600MHz and Up to 480GB self-encrypted Intel SSD. Other functions, Orwl also has Intel Wireless IEEE802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Dual mode Bluetooth 2.1, BTLE4.2, Type-C ports and two USB 3.0 and support 4K output HDMI interface.
