10,000 Seeds of Hope

in #charity7 years ago (edited)

I have been away from Steemit for a bit.

Not on purpose though, it's just gotten so busy for my family and myself lately due to assisting our friends and family who are suffering the affects of Hurricane Maria which devastated the island of Puerto Rico (as well as some other Caribbean Islands), back in September.

Ever since the storm, many Boricuas (Puerto Ricans) who live on the island have had to deal with no running water, contaminated streams and rivers, no electricity, and no food (over 80% of the food crops were destroyed). Besides the high winds from the storm, floods as well as mudslides have decimated homes, farms, and businesses. Due to the territory status of the island and the antiquated Jones Act, which prevents other countries from aiding the island directly, Puerto Ricans are suffering greatly.

As a result, many of the Puerto Rican Diaspora throughout the world are scrambling to help their family and friends back home. From fundraising to physically delivering basic supplies to those in need, Diaspora Puerto Ricans and supportive allies are tirelessly rallying to fill the void left by red tape and government bureaucracy.

Many houses were destroyed during the storm and, as of this post, hundreds of thousands are still without electricity and/or running water

After chatting with fellow members on the YouAreHOPE Discord Server at: https://discord.gg/zkTeKeS , members quickly asked how they can help those in Puerto Rico who are affected by the storm, as a result, 10,000 Organic, Heirloom Seeds in 30 Food Varieties were donated by @sircork and @topkpop donated to the gofundme set up by the grassroots group that I am a part of, Voces Del Barrio. With these and other wonderful donations, we were able to send supplies, seeds, and food as well as hand deliver much needed items like solar panels and water filters to the families in need in the hardest to reach areas of the island.

Wonderful! I am glad I was able to help even a tiny bit. It was so wonderful for everyone to get out and help this great great cause. Thanks for reaching out with this.

Thank YOU so much @topkpop! There are more photos to come- I'm hoping that some of the farmers send a few photos of the food that they will grow from the seeds given- that is going to be so AWESOME

Yes @em3 most definitely! Thank you so much 🙏🏽

I am so sorry to hear that your friends and family were affected by the storms. But it’s so good to see this community coming together to lend out helping hearts and hands :)

Thank you very much @crosheille 🙏🏽

You’re very welcome ~

really great to see you able to get some help to the people affected by the storms.

Heard people will be without power for like a year down there!

Yes :( but fortunately the people are resilient and are finding ways to help one another. However, PTSD is starting to take hold of many people, not only because of the storm but the aftermath and clear disregard from the US federal agencies that were supposed to help them.

Ya our govt is all talk unless it involves them making money.

You are correct 😔 and that is why we are rolling up our sleeves and try to help as many families as possible ✊🏽

Good on ya sweets, I admire your charitable efforts :)

We reap what we sow. Maybe we can plant a little HOPE. :)

Thank you again @sircork and @youarehope ❤️ More updates to come!!

Lol! Thank you :D @spacetrucker!

Great work and effort hats off to you and those who helped

Thank you @tattoodjay ! Trying our best with what resources we have!

Its all you can do but I hope the respurces keep coming
