Violet the Spinach Lover

in #chicken6 years ago (edited)

Violet is new to our yard and flock. Well, not brand-new. She started out as a baby here, raised by one of my mama hens. A friend of mine took her and 5 others to start his own flock.

Long story short - fast forward at least 3 years, maybe longer, time has a way of swirling by and it is years later before we know it, and the 2 remaining chickens made it back to me.

We are having one problem. Our rooster Dan, a huge dude, does not like them at all and beats them up badly if he gets a chance.

The introduction run I have in the larger enclosure is not that big and I feel bad about having them in there all the time when they were used to free-range and are really more like little dogs than chickens.

They come when called - most of the time and like to hang out with humans, watching what is going on. Both like to be picked up and petted.

And, as you can see, Violet likes to eat the Spinach 😄

It's male dominance thingy, the dominant male (Dan) may injury the others if not restricted and the bad part is even when the others cock is down injured the dominant male will keep peeking it. "Show no mercy" is there motor. My mom once had situation like that and the dominant male was restricted but it let itself out and by morning the other cock was dead, eyes out head blooded and it kept peeking the dead cock. Horrible stuff mahn, I just saw the flash back as I was typing. Yak.

yup. I get that between two males and even have seen hens get pretty mean. but the two new ones are girls and usually, the rooster is very nice. Don't know why he doesn't like these two. Just more work for me right now.

Ahhh! Pretty big work.
