The liver is an essential detox organ, and is one of the most important organs in the body for cellular detox and overall health and wellbeing. In addition to detox the liver also manufactures and regulated hormones, creates proteins, cleanses the blood, regulated essential vitamins and minerals and plays a critical role in digestion.

Chicory is a Liver Loving Plant

A liver that is functioning toxins well will allow the body to be cleansed of toxins and will give overall energy and support to the body and to mental and physical wellbeing. Additionally, a healthy liver supports a healthy immune system, skin, nails, hair, libido, and overall wellness. Conversely, a liver that is not filtering well can result in an overly toxic system and can lead to low energy, skin inflammation, low sex drive, brain fog, decreased mental alertness, and other health issues.

Luckily, there are some easy additions that can be made to the diet in order to assist the liver with its hepatic cleansing capabilities. Chicory Root (Cichorium intybus) is a wonderful plant that can be added into the diet with ease. This food treatment is also known as endive, and is often added to salads to add a slightly bitter flavor. This is a food that can be used as medicine without much change to regular routine. Fresh endive can be added to salads to improve health and digestion and to aid in liver cleansing.

Chicory can also be found in dry form and can be made into a tea. It is often consumed before meals to stimulate appetite and to bolster digestive function. Chicory contains lactucopricin, which gives it its bitter taste, and has a cholegogue effect, meaning that it facilitates the release of bile from the gallbladder. The gallbladder can be considered as an assistant organ to the liver, so supporting both organs is essential and beneficial for liver health.

Chicory is mildly laxative and can be incorporated into the diet of people with chronic constipation, and can also be used as a mild diuretic for water retention. Chicory root can be found in dried form, and can be used as a nice substitute for coffee as it can promote digestion without a stimulant quality.

Fresh Chicory is easily incorporated into salads to bring bitterness and promote digestion and cleansing of toxins. The leaves can also be juiced into a bitter juice as an appetite stimulant. Whole dried roots can be boiled into a decoction or can be bout ground and powdered for preparation as a substitute for coffee. It is also possible to find chicory extract at local health stores or apothecary in support of liver health.
