Sayings From Recovery - Chop The Wood In Front of You
The recovery community has many sayings that, although they might not be unique to us, they have special meaning to us. Sometimes when a newcomer hears them said or used they look at us like a bunch of crackpots. I remember when I first went to meetings and I heard some of the sayings being repeated, I thought they was all part of a cult and I wanted no part of it.
Now I realize those sayings have a deep meaning and they have been around for a long time for a reason, because they are true!
Chop the wood in front of you!
I am starting with this saying because I it is the one that I believe is the newest. At least it is the newest I have heard being around the program, but even with it being a newer saying, it still has some pretty good recovery messages in it.
So what does it mean anyway?
The basic meaning behind this saying, and another reason why I chose to start with this one (Simplicity) is to do the things that you need to do in order of when and how important they are to get done.
If you had a big pile of wood, it becomes very easy to get discouraged when you look at it, thinking to yourself "Man that is a lot of wood! I will never get it done!" However, if you get to work and start chopping the next piece, not worrying about the whole pile, you will be surprised at how soon the job gets done.
If you focus on the next thing in front of you instead of the seemingly impossible things down the road, your life will be easier. Here is a epiphany too, those things down the road that everyone worries about, may never happen anyway! So why not just do the next thing that needs done and let the future worry about itself?
One of many
There are actually a couple of different sayings in recovery that have similar meanings to this one, but this one really is the most simple. Some of the others have meanings that you have to really ponder to understand, but this one focuses on the simpleness of the program.
Like it is always said "Recovery is a simple program for complicated people."
Always remember K.I.S.S. - Keep It Simple Stupid!
So next time you go to a meeting and you hear the sayings, instead of thinking that we are all a bunch of brainwashed fools in a cult (Exactly what I thought at one time....) take the time to realize that our sayings and slogans have been around a long time, and that is for the reason that they apply to what we are trying to do in life - Recover from addictions and compulsions!
