THE DEITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

To many, it may sound incredible to believe or hear that the Holy Spirit is God; but that is what He is; the deity of the Holy Spirit was concealed in the Old Testament but revealed in the New Testament. It was Jesus Christ that revealed this mystery when he told his disciples to baptize those who will believe in him in the name of the father, and of the son and of the Holy Ghost. Matt. 28:19. From his statement in this passage we come to understand that, the father, the son and the Holy Spirit are co-equal. They deserved equal respect and honor. (See also Phil. 2:6).

The apostles understood that he is God, listen to what Peter said. “But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? And after it was sold was it not in thine own power? Why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? Thou hast not lied unto man but unto God”. Acts. 5:3-4.

The Holy Spirit possessed all the characteristics that God alone has such as:-

A. Eternal nature of God. Heb. 9:14

B. The Holy Spirit is said to be present everywhere at the same time and this attribute is called Omnipresence nature of God. Psa. 139:7-10.

C. He knows all things- Omniscience in nature. 1 cor. 2:10-11

He possesses all power and with him nothing is impossible. Lk., 1:35,37’

D. All the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit recorded in Galatians 5:22-23; are found in God and speaks of the nature of God which he shared with the Christian at conversion. When Jesus Christ was talking to his disciples he said, “if a man love me, he will keep my words, And my father will love him, and we will come into him and make our abode with him”. Jn. 14:23:

What did you understand by these statements? Off course, it shows that the Holy Spirit that came into the believer to indwell him at salvation is the embodiment of the trinity residing inside him. Paul was asking the Corinthian Christians whether they do not know that their body is the temple of God; let us read that passage.

“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
If any man defiles the temple of God him shall God destroy. For the temple of God is Holy; which temple ye are”.

In the same 1 Corinthians chapter 6:19 he says.

“What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost? Which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

Also the word of God says that it was God who raised Jesus from the dead. Acts. 2:24-32 and in Romans 8:11. We read that it was the Holy Spirit who raised him from the dead.

Paul while talking to the Corinthian Christian says that his preaching was with the power of the Holy Spirit. 1 Cor. 2:4, and in verse 5 he says that their faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

With all these explanations, you can see that the writers of the New Testament books acknowledged that the Holy Spirit is God.

Finally, all scripture is inspired by the holy spirit. Without the holy Spirit you cannot understand the mysteries of his words.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (KJV)

16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
