Origin of Christmas tree tradition
Merry Christmas everyone!
Have you ever wondered why we bring trees into our homes this time of year and decorate them?
I did so now I'll share what I've found.
There is no official record crediting the first Christmas tree to anyone, although they say the first originated in either Germany or Latvia sometime in the early 1500's.
Some even believe it was St. Boniface that created the Christmas tree in the 7th century.
It is also said that if you were too poor to afford a real tree, people would build pyramids out of wood, decorate them with paper, candles and paper and carry them house to house rather than displaying them in a single home. These were meant to be like "Paradise trees".
Paradise trees were often used in medieval German plays carried out in front of German churches on December 24th (Adam & Eve's day on early saints calanders) in order to tell stories of the bible for people that could not read.
The "paradise tree" was meant to represent the garden of Eden.
The first person to bring a Christmas tree (how we think of them today) into their home was a preacher named Martin Luther in the early 16th century.
The first Christmas tree in the white house was brought in by President Benjamin Harrison in 1889.
Just thought I would share that with you guys.
Merry Christmas everyone!
hmm i didnt know about the pyramids of wood that was quite interesting. Also it varies from country to country, for example even though in my country we have the general christmas tree, our traditional ''tree'' is a boat!
very interesting indeed!
