Make your Android phone to a desktop-like thing

in #chromecast7 years ago

This post is a next episode of my last post about "how to make your non-OTG phone to a desktop", which you will find here:

After some searching on the web and experimenting with my hotspot and stuff, I finally found out how to create something similar to a desktop phone.

This is just a step-by-step post, because I'm to lazy to write stories right now.

So first things first, we need some prerequisites to make to combination of things even possible.

Make sure you own ...

  • A phone, which has a minimum of 1GB of RAM or more
  • A phone with Android 4.4.2, a similar ROM or a higher version (My phone has 4.4.2)
  • Mobile internet access
  • A second Android device, which is able to run Googles "Home" app (For the setup of our chromecast only)
  • A chromecast (I own the "disk")
  • A keyboard and/or a mouse (I'm using the KSK-3220BT and the cheap JETech 0884 mouse)
  • The app "Rotation Control", to keep the screen in its state
  • And the Lightning Launcher, if you want full customization with Javascript and the possibility to zoom in and out to create a "desktop"

  1. Okay so first we turn everything on (expect the Bluetooth devices, because we don't need them right now)
  2. Then on phone A (which is the phone we will use as desktop), we turn on hotspot, Bluetooth (for the Bluetooth devices),we enable the power saving mode and mobile data
  3. Now we open the Home app on our second Android device, phone B
  4. We connect phone B to the hotspot of phone A and do a full setup of our chromecast on phone B
  5. On phone A, we should be able to use the Home app to stream our screen now and we can throw phone B out of the window or whatever you're doing with it (give it back to your brother for example)
  6. At the end, we connect our Bluetooth keyboard and mouse to phone A and connect our charging cable

And that's it! To stream your screen now, you open the Home app, press on the left upper corner (the burger menu) and then you tap on "Stream your screen" (or how it's called in english)

Because the chromecast is able to save the hotspot it was connected to in the past, we can do everything until step two and then stream the screen.

If your phone is fast enough, it's even possible to stream videos and stuff.

Something I recognize is (when connecting my Bluetooth devices to my phone), that my chromecast gets displayed as Bluetooth device. Maybe you'll find anything about it, I'm looking forward to hear about that!

Please comment problems and how you solved them under this post, to keep everything at one place (the internet is big).

Some troubleshooting

When I click on "Stream your screen", my chromecast keeps refusing the connection. It says "Connection lost"!

Just turn off and turn back on your chromecast, that should be the trick. If it's still not working, reboot your Android device.

My chromecast loses its connection to my phone! / My chromecast loses its connection to the internet!

When that happens, then the mobile data signal is not enough, but the chromecast should be able to reconnect after some seconds up to one minute. If its still not able to connect, turn off and turn back on your mobile data.
