Do women politicians enhance economic growth? What's your opinion?
The number of women entering the mainstream politics has risen steadily over decades. Till now 100 countries have introduced reservation for women in parliament or parties. Also the percentage of women in parliaments worldwide has doubled in last 20 years(22.8% till June 2016).
A research study by T. Baskaran and team whether "women politicians are good for economic growth" was conducted of Indian political system,largest democracy in the world.
Data from 4,625 state assembly constituencies in India between 1992-2012 was analysed. During this period the women representation in the assembly grew from 4.5% to 8%. The study used satellite imagery of night luminosity as a measure of economic performance, and compared constituencies in which a woman won against a man by narrow margin to those won by a man against a woman by a narrow margin. It was seen that women legislators in India raised economic performance in their constituencies by about 1.8% /year more than male counterparts. According to study , women legislators were" less likely to be criminal and corrupt, more efficacious, and less vulnerable to political opportunism".
So women should be encouraged to join politics.
