The Day I Went From Being A Regular Kid To A Savvy Clothing Reseller
It was the first day of my freshmen year of highschool. This kid walks into class that looked strangely familiar but I couldn't place my finger on why. He sits next to me and introduces himself. We get to talking and we both realized that we used to go to the same elementary school together. We haven't seen each other since 4th grade because I moved. We catch up and talk for a bit and then I ask him about his tee. It was cool looking with an astronaut on the front. I told him I'd like to get one too because I loved and still love astronomy so it seemed like my type of tee. He told me the brand was called Billionaire Boys Club and that it was kind of expensive. I didn't care, I had to have the tee since it looked so cool. That same week he took me to their store location in Soho Manhattan. I was amazed at how beautiful everything was in Soho, all the stores, the women, the activity, I fell in love with the place. The inside of the store was even more amazing. Aestheticism was on point in there. I bought my first tee that day. When we walked out of the store he told me that not only is the tee good quality and looks good but also retains its value pretty well even when worn. I was skeptical. How could a worn tee be worth even close to retail price I asked. That's when he told me about supply and demand. He told me because the tee would never be made again and because it wasn't in mass production people would covet it a year from then just on the fact of supply and demand. He did note that a brand being in style did play a part in the liquidity of the tee but said that because of the characteristics of the brand, even if the brand went out of style true collectors of the brand would still pay close to retail price for it even 5 years from now. I had heard all I needed to hear at that point. I was hooked. When I got home I joined as many Facebook buying and selling groups as I could to be in a marketplace where that brand and other similar tier brands were bought and sold. I started watching YouTube videos on what brands were in style and what pieces to look for. I always liked fashion just a little with my standard pair of Jordans and nice clean tees but this new found knowledge exploded my range of possibilities. I thought of clothing and sneakers as stocks in a brand from that point forward. I chose to only purchase clothing and sneakers that I liked but also had retained value over time. Don't get me wrong I still shopped at H&M and Uniqlo and other staple brands but those brands I only bought for the plain clothes like blue button shirts, white & black tees, jeans & khakis that sort of stuff. I slowly built up my collection each year. I'd sell something I got tired of or knew that I could flip for some extra cash and put it into my collection again. When I hit senior year I had a decent enough collection and I was more focused on buying for profit rather then putting the pieces in my collection but that's part two to this story and how my clothing reselling exploded even more. Hope you enjoyed this read and that it was somewhat educational till next time.
