Since, I am a medical student, I have skills lab course in my medical university to learn basic first aid. Personally, I think that every human should have basic knowledge of first aid as it can become handy in any disastrously situation. These simple techniques can save a person's life in any medical situation like simple road accidents and other emergency cases. This week we learnt Intramuscular (IM) and Intravenous (IV) canalization methods.

I had my lab this Friday and I was very excited for it. The lab is on second floor. The lab is well lit and has different Medical tools placed in it as well as mannequins I reached there by time and marked my attendance. The students of my group kept filling the place until the professor arrived.

We were first shown a video about the techniques. Then the professor explained it by doing so on a mannequin. I'll list the steps below for you to get an idea of it.

The common steps included in both methods is asking the consent of patient, washing your hands for about 30 seconds, wearing gloves and discarding the equipment after use.

IM (INTRAMUSCULAR)

For Intramuscular puncture the gluteus maximus is punctured at the upper left quadrant. The place is first cleaned with an alcohol swab. The injection is placed at 90° with your dominant hand while stretching the muscle below with your other hand. This method is used for injecting medicines. It is important to check if there's no blood in injection. The injection is then emptied into the muscle and taken out slowly.

IV (INTRAVENOUS)

The intravenous puncture can either be used for injecting medicines or for drawing out blood for blood tests such as sugar level, bilirubin levels etc. A tourniquet is tied on the arm for high blood pressure. The vein area to be injected is cleaned with an alcohol swab. The injection is placed at 30° and the vein is punctured. The blood is drawn out. It is then poured in a test tube. A swab is placed with pressure so that the person doesn't bleed. The tourniquet is opened.

We were then allowed to practice both the methods on the mannequins while the professor monitored us. She corrected some of the students. I did both of the methods quite nicely and she appreciated me.

This was really enlightening and educative session for all of us, I really hope that I'll be able to continue this series and provide you knowledge about more basic medical skills.

That concludes today's lesson. I had a great time examining the Skills Lab. I hope you enjoyed reading my diary as much as I did; if so, please let me know in the comments area. I'll return with a new diary.

Thanks
