Anuradha Koirala- A CNN HERO
Anuradha Koirala was born in 1949 in the lap of his father Pratap Singh and Laxmi Gurung. She spend must of her early childhood in the Kaimpong, India. Environment of the St.Joseph, Which was her first School, made her more devoted to the Social Work. Her main source of the inspiration is Mother Teresa. Before starting the Maiti Nepal, She spent more than 20 years teaching at various school at several places including Kathmandu. She always love teaching students but trafficking of the women, children and girls make her to change her destination that lead her more valuable and more important person. Condition of the women, who was been trafficked, was worse. Violence and the sexual exploitation they suffer made her to work for her.
In 1993, Ms. Koirala founded Maiti Nepal which aim to provide services for both children and women. First, she established the home for those girls whom she rescued, and they have nowhere to go for live. Now, Maiti Nepal has around 11 transit homes, three prevention cares, two hospices and a School as well. There are around 1000 of the student under the prevention of the Maiti Nepal. Beside those activities Maiti Nepal is doing various activities like Organizing awareness campaigns, community sensitization programs, rescue operations, apprehending traffickers, providing legal support to the needy, women empowerment programs, trainings, providing anti retro viral therapy (ART) to children and women infected by HIV etc. They are doing this type of the work in the regular basis at the various part of the Nepal. Miti Nepal achievements include liberating girls from brothels, saving many girls trafficking to the several countries, providing the girls various training to help then for living and many more. Due to her continuous struggle, Government of Nepal now recognizes 5th September as an anti- trafficking day. Ms. Koirala was also appointed as a former Assistant State Minister of Women Children and Social Welfare as an honor to her contribution.
The founder of this all the big work Anuradha Koirala has been awarded around 38 national and international award for her courageous acts and achievements in the field of the women and Children. She is self-motivated person relishing new and dynamic challenges with a leadership role which is beneficial for the society and country and leave the positive impact to the people leaving around her. She has been awarded as the CNN Hero for her contribution to the women and children and to the society and humanity. She has awarded with the some other national and international award as well like Prabal Gorkha Dakshin Bahu Medal- Nepal 1999, Trishaktipatta Award 2002, Best Social Worker of the Year Award- Nepal 1998, German UNIFEM Prize 2007, Queen Sofia Silver Medal Award 2007, The Peace Abbey, and Courage of Conscience 2006.
