Things I wish I have learned before my first commercial project #2 - to type

in #coding7 years ago

Probably for most of you it is obvious that programmer have to be able to type fast and without looking at the keyboard, but for me it wasn’t. I assumed that I can do good with my writing only with index fingers. I was fast enough at my previous jobs, and I thought that, because coding involves lot of thinking in the process, my poor writing skills don’t matter.

It was HUGE mistake!

When You are a beginner in coding and get first job this is really good to do lots of pair coding, frequently ask coworkers for tips etc. They are usually really busy and slow typing and overusing a mouse annoys them a lot. My mentor when he want to show me some solution usually grabs my keyboard and type himself. He hates how I lose focus when I start typing.

If You also lack this ability I recommend you to change it immediately. Fast typing means more learning opportunities and smother cooperation at work. It will take some time but it pays back. And there are tons of free tools on the web which will help You.

Good luck!
