Forgotten by History: Carausius coin

For 1,800 years, the story of Carausius a lost British emperor, who defied ancient Rome, has been merely a footnote in history book. An astonishing discovery of 52,000 Roman coins has thrown a new light on the history.

Hundreds of the coins buried in a gigantic clay jar and weighing as much as two men, bearing the image of the Carausius was discovered in Britain.

The discovery was made by Dave Crisp, a hospital chef, using a metal detector. He unearthed 21 of the coins on a farm near Frome in Somerset before realizing that the find was so significant and called for the help of experts. The hoard was then taken to the British museum to be cleaned up and recorded.

The coins span 40 years from AD 253 to AD 293 and a great majority of them are radiates made from debased silver or bronze.

It is believed that the Carausius reign in Britain was for seven years and a lot have already been forgotten about the emperor until the discovery was made.
