Cold hat helps prevent stroke

in #cold6 years ago

New invention of British scientists could help in the fight against brain damage and save millions of stroke.

It's a special cap that cools the brain and stops cell death in case of sudden damage such as stroke. The hat is being developed by a team at the University of Edinburgh and its task quickly and without side effects to reduce the temperature of the brain.

Studies show that reducing brain temperature even with only one or two degrees can significantly increase the chances of a patient to overcome the attack by putting the brain in a state of temporary hibernation.

Once it becomes clear that man is the victim of a stroke, his head placed cold cap, and pipes it is injected coolant. This leads to removal of the temperature of the brain than normal 37C to about 35C, which in turn stops cell death, which otherwise is unavoidable given that they no longer have oxygen.

For the moment the team in the Scottish university is working on a portable version of the hat that can be used by teams ambulance. In the UK around 200 people a day receive a blow that have fatal consequences. Many more remain disabled and live in fear that a second attack could have irreversible consequences.
