WISCONSIN 48 - Florida Atlantic 13—Wisconsin shook off sluggish 1st Q
vs. Utah St. (trailed 10-0) to score 59 straight as QB Alex Hornibrook threw for
244 yds. & 3 TDs. FAU yielded 526 total yds. and 6.1 ypc in 42-19 home loss
to Navy, as the Lane Kiffin era began with a flameout. Kiffin's collection of
transfers appeared disjointed at times, although soph QB Daniel Parr threw for
281 yds. and 2 TDs. Badgers have a lot more muscle up front than Middies, and
Hornibrook has made a big jump. (FIRST MEETING)

ARMY 24 - Buffalo 17—Have to be more impressed with Buffalo defense
holding Minnesota to 3.3 ypc and just 2 TDs than Army running wild on
outmanned Fordham side. Bulls "D" only had coverage problems vs. the
Gophers, and Army doesn't throw (only 2 passes vs. the Rams). Double-digit
points worth taking with Bulls’ strong-armed soph QB Tyree Jackson.

RUTGERS 24 - Eastern Michigan 23—Rutgers looked improved in standing
up to Washington last Friday. Addition of L'ville grad transfer QB Kyle Bolin
and return to health of playmaking WR/KR Janarion Grant have made a
difference in what was a terrible offense LY. However, EMU has been dynamite
vs. spread on road (7-1 vs. L8 vs. points), and vet QB Brogan Roback heads a
very experienced team. Still, have to be getting some points before backing
Eagle side that was 8-52 SU on the road prior to LY (4-2 SU away)... and is 0-
37 SU all-time against current Big Ten teams!. (DNP...SR: Rutgers 1-0)

MASSACHUSETTS 34 - Old Dominion 31—ODU gained just 285 yds. and
managed only 12 offensive FDs in laborious non-cover against Albany Saturday.
Monarchs' soph QB Blake LaRussa's 161 YP, 2 int. performance magnified loss
of graduated QB Washington (2836 YP, 31-5 TD-int. LY). UMass QB Andrew
Ford has been sharp in first two (65%, 295 ypg passing), so points worth taking.

DUKE 24 - Northwestern 21—Pat Fitzgerald has won this chess match lately
vs. David Cutcliffe, but Duke now better set at QB than LY, when then-RS frosh QB
Jones had just been forced into action after injury to starter Sirk (now at ECU). NU
more capable than NC Central to exploit Blue Devils' rebuilt DL and 2ndary, but Cats
were not able to establish their infantry (only 3 1 ypc) as they would have liked vs.
Nevada, and took a long time to put away MW Wolf Pack last week.

South Florida 42 - CONNECTICUT 17—Following two sluggish efforts,
AAC favorite USF should come out smokin' in loop opener at UConn. Huskies'
sr. backup QB Bryant Shirreffs provided spark in labored 27-20 home win vs.
FCS Holy Cross. But limited UConn "O" will eventually lose touch with explosive
Bull attack, orchestrated by deluxe sr. dual-threat QB Quinton Flowers, who
accounted for 370 yds. in USF's 42-27 win at Tampa LY.

MICHIGAN 45 - Cincinnati 6—Heavily-favored Cincy (42-pt. chalk!) was
actually outgained by Austin Peay in lackluster 26-14 home win. So, must "lay
it" with Michigan, which overcame two pick-sixes in 33-17 triumph over Florida.
Reloaded Wolverine "D" looks even faster than LY's stifling unit and should
disrupt Bearcat QB Moore, who had only 151 YP vs. the Govs. Jim Harbaugh
makes Cincy's new HC Luke Fickell wish he had stayed on the Ohio State staff.
Wolverines 7-1 vs. spread in last 8 home openers. (FIRST MEETING)

Louisville 36 - NORTH CAROLINA 33—The back-storylines for this game
will surely mention each being in NCAA gunsights (which also has Roy Williams
and Rick Pitino very worried on the hoops side). UNC played as if the hammer
had already dropped in surprise loss to underdog Cal, and Heels look like they
miss departed d.c. Gene Chizik. But the ‘Ville continues to be overvalued, as
Purdue escape the latest example of Lamar Jackson hype distorting spreads
(Cards 2-8 L10 vs. line). (DNP...SR: Louisville 4-3)

KANSAS STATE 48 - Charlotte 7—Bigger challenges ahead for K-State,
but this Bill Snyder edition has a new big-play "O" (QB Ertz 333 YP and 4
TDP...on 10 completions last week!) and enough horsepower to extend margins,
as was case in scoring 55 last week vs. FCS Central Arkansas. C-USA sources
wondering if Charlotte might temporarily regress as much of HC Lambert's
original core of recruits graduated after LY, and QB Klugh was forced to carry too
much mail in opening loss at EMU. (FIRST MEETING)

IOWA STATE 29 - Iowa 26—Prior to LY (when ISU was in adjustment period
under new HC Campbell), the "Cy-Hawk" series had been competitive. And
while Iowa infantry depth aided by Nevada transfer RB Butler, this is first road
start for new QB Stanley, a cautious 8-for-15 in Wyo opener. Cyclone "O" clicked
late LY when switch made to QB Park, and new big-play "D" gave Kirk Ferentz
something to think about with two pick-sixes in win vs. capable Northern Iowa.

*NEW MEXICO 40 - New Mexico State 35—The locals finally have a reason
to pay attention rather than take the aerial tram up to Sandia Peak, as NMSU
making a game of it lately vs. favored UNM, even upsetting Lobos in Las Cruces
LY. Improved Ag "D" (under no-nonsense d.c. Spaziani, former BC HC) could
give Bob Davie's Lobo Pistol some issues after registering 7 sacks in opener at
ASU, and backdoor open for NMSU QB Rogers (398 YP at Tempe).

*UTEP 28 - Rice 23—Rice has been on the road lately more than Sec. of
State Tillerson, detoured to Fort Worth to wait out Harvey at TCU, and now to El
Paso (750 miles from Houston), all after trip to Australia. Sheesh! Another
undersized Owls "D" (ranked 123rd LY) looks most-exploitable platoon on field,
and beleaguered David Bailiff doesn't have "O" to mask those flaws as in past.

COLORADO 52 - Texas State 11—Texas State has won just 2 of its last 12
games, versus Incarnate Word 48-17 last year and Houston Baptist 20-11 last
week. Rebuilding on offense, the Bobcats can't be expected to keep up with
defending Pac-12 South champ Colorado. The Buffs are deep at the skill
positions, and their supposedly rebuilding defense limited the flashy Colorado
State attack to just 3 points last week! (DNP...SR: Colorado 1-0)

BALL STATE 31 - Uab 14—Despite 38-7 victory over Alabama A&M, not
exactly ready to jump on UAB bandwagon. The Blazers were taking their lumps
from FBS foes before the program took a 2-year hiatus from football. Ball State
has a vet QB in Riley Neal (4817 YP, 29 TDs L2Ys), an all-MAC RB in James
Gilbert (1332 YR LY), an experienced OL, and an improved defense that held
Illini to 216 total yards in cover at Illinois. (FIRST MEETING)

SYRACUSE 36 - Middle Tennessee 33—Matchups were all wrong for
MTSU against Vandy and its legit SEC defense. Now Blue Raiders face a stillsuspect
Cuse "D" (ranked 122nd LY) more reminiscent of those it faces in
C-USA. Rebuilt Orange 2ndary gets a tougher test vs. MTSU gunslinger
Stockstill (31 TDP LY) than vs. limited Central Conn. in opener. Shootout
between Cuse QB Dungey and Stockstill likely goes to wire. (FIRST MEETING)

Indiana 38 - VIRGINIA 28—Indiana drops in class after facing Ohio St.,
while Virginia is off a 28-10 non-cover against Wm. & Mary. Hoosier QB Richard
Lagow had an eye-popping 410 YP and 3 TDs against the Buckeyes, as Indy's
defense fought hard in helping fashion a halftime lead before fading late. Cav
stop unit ranked 119th in pass eff. "D" LY, and will have a challenge covering
Hoosier WRs Simmie Cobbs and Luke Timian.

PENN STATE 44 - Pittsburgh 20—Penn State's 52-0 blowout of Akron
coupled with Pitt being forced to OT against Youngstown St. after blowing 21-
0 lead will inflate number on this one. Still, don't fancy bucking revenge-seeking
Nittany Lion side that looks like a juggernaut, as 2nd-year o.c. Joe Moorhead's
spread is blossoming. PSU QB McSorley will make up for throwing an
interception in the Pitt end zone with 1:15 left in Panthers' 42-39 win last season.

ALABAMA 44 - Fresno State10—Fresno wins the award for biggest class

teams routinely go a bit flat in Game Two (only three covers in ten), often as skyhigh
chalk vs. outmanned non-SEC foes...like this week. Bulldogs used to
playing at big-time venues, and MW sources believe FSU not likely to be

NAVY 41 - Tulane 17—Tulane HC Willie Fritz has found a good fit for his
option-based attack in 6-2 jr. Jonathan Banks (Kansas State/juco transfer).
However, still support home-loving Navy, which is 12-3 vs. spread last 15 in
Annapolis. Middies' ultra-physical, strong-running triple-option operator jr. Zach
Abey (235 YR vs. FAU in opener) will continue to pound, while aggressive Navy

*Western Kentucky 38 - ILLINOIS 26—Illini HC Lovie Smith must've been
stressed as his side trailed Ball State 21-16 with minutes left at home last week.
Illinois needed a 52-yd. PR, a Crouch TD pass with 2:06 left and a blocked kick
on the final play to preserve a 24-21 win over the MAC Cards. WKU not exactly
impressive in 31-17 victory against E. Ky. last week, but look for sr. ‘Topper QB
Mike White (308 ypg passing, 38-7 TD-int. in 15 gms. at WKU) to flex his muscles.

BAYLOR 38 - Utsa 29—The Baptists at Baylor might be justifying the shock
loss to Jerry Falwell Jr.'s Liberty as a sort of penance for the various misdeeds
of the Art Briles regime, but Bear fans were justifiably alarmed by the lack of "D"
in debut of new HC Matt Rhule. Junking the Briles "O for more-conventional sets
might pay off with Arizona transfer QB Solomon, but mobile UTSA QB Sturm
another test for Baylor on stop end. Roadrunners anxious to get on the field after
Harvey postponed opener vs. Houston. (FIRST MEETING)

UCLA 45 - Hawaii 20—HC Nick Rolovich is doing some good things with the
UH offense (79 points first two games). But foes UMass and W. Carolina are not
exactly Alabama on defense. So Josh Rosen and Co. will do plenty of damage,
as they did in final 18 minutes against Texas A&M. Bruins' spirits and confidence
super high after rallying from 34 pts. back vs. the Aggies. Rainbow Warriors
have been good road warriors (5-2 last 7 as road dog), but quick QB Dru Brown
can't keep pace with high-octane Bruins. (DNP...SR: UCLA 2-0)
KANSAS 31 - Central Michigan 23—CMU intercepted 6 passes last week
against Rhode Island, but still blew a 13-0 halftime lead, as it took triple OT to
edge the Rams 30-27. Colonial rep URI was 2-9 SU LY, including a 55-6 loss
at Kansas! And Chips now in 2-9 spread slump. New Jayhawk QB Peyton
Bender (ex-Wash. St. recruit, JC LY) had 364 YP and 4 TDP vs. SE Mo. St.
(14-KANSAS -4 24-10 u45...SR: Kansas 2-0)

OREGON 48 - Nebraska 35—Nebraska was more than a bit wobbly in 43-
36 win over Ark. St., barely hanging on, as Red Wolf QB Hansen's pass from the
11 went through the hands of Edwards as time expired. Oregon seeking revenge
for last season's loss to the Huskers. In that one, the Ducks blew a 13-pt.
cushion, rallied back only to lose on a late 34-yd. TD run. Oregon HC Willie
Taggart has 17 starters back from that painful memory game, and Duck tuneup
vs. S. Utah went smoothly (RBs Freeman & Benoit combined 257 YR, 7 TDs).

Miami-Fla. 38 - ARKANSAS STATE 17—Ark. State threw a major scare at
Nebraska last week, with QB Hansen overthrowing his target in the end zone on
the final play of a 43-36 loss. Miami has more athletes on defense than the
Huskers, and new No. 1 QB Malik Rosier has starting experience on the road,
hitting 20 of 29 for 272 yards, 2 TDs and 1 int. in 2015 at Duke. Hurricanes 5-
1 as road favorite LY, including a 45-10 rout at Sun Belt power App State.

TEXAS 44 - San Jose State 13—The horror! Texas gave up 51 points to
Maryland last week, not to mention 263 yards and 4 TDs on the ground! The
defense of coordinator Todd Orlando was sometimes misaligned vs. the Terps,
and then often confused after the snap. UT's 41 points, 473 yards, and 3
defense/STs TDs weren't enough. Expect a sounder approach vs. San Jose (3-
13 last 16 as road dog), which was burned for 548 yards at home 2 weeks ago
in opener vs. South Florida. (FIRST MEETING)

Tcu 38 - ARKANSAS 31—In near pick ‘em affair, "invest" on revengeminded
TCU, which outgained Arkansas 572-403 in LY's stinging 41-38 double-OT
loss. With the Horned Frogs' main weapon RB Kyle Hicks (out of opener with
leg injury) probably back, believe dynamic sr. QB Kenny Hill (470 total yds. in
LY's tilt) & mates pile up more "chunk plays" than Razorback arsenal. Hog attack
will be kept off kilter vs. Horned Frogs' fierce front 7, anchored by jr. LB Ty
Summers (2nd-team all-Big 12 LY).

TULSA 38 - La.-Lafayette 30—ULL needed to return a 2-pt. conversion
attempt 98 yds. for a TD with 42 ticks left to pull out a wild 51-48 win over
underrated SE Louisiana (led by South Carolina transfer QB Lorenzo Nunez).
But feel youthful UT won't easily pull away from Ragin Cajuns, who went 3-0 as
a visiting underdog LY, including 35-21 loss at Georgia. Sun Belt scouts report
ULL has much better attitude TY after many players selfishly pursued individual
goals in 2016. (DNP...SR: La.-Lafayette 5-4)

*NORTH CAROLINA ST. 42 - Marshall 14—Leading in the misleading
score category last week was Marshall, which used a pair of KR TDs and a long
pick six in a narrow escape vs. Miami-Ohio. More disturbing for Herd was
generating only 59 YR vs. a middling MAC defense. Doc Holliday now faces a
legit ACC "D" and an angry NCS after bitter opening loss vs. South Carolina, and
under-fire Wolfpack HC Dave Doeren has been a very good bully the past couple
of years (NCS 7-2 laying DDs since 2015). (DNP...SR: North Carolina St. 3-0)

*Toledo 34 - NEVADA 29—Toledo and playmaker QB Woodside are
dangerous, but this is an odd trip for the Rockets from shores of Maumee Bay
to the foot of the Sierras. MW sources watching Nevada, which had Northwestern
on ropes last week and looks in midst of a major coaching upgrade from the
grating Brian Polian to crafty Jay Norvell, whose mix of the old Wolf Pack Pistol
and new spread looks directed by holdover QB Gangi. (DNP...SR: Toledo 3-0)

*FLORIDA STATE 48 - La.-Monroe 7—Even with talented 6-5 true frosh QB
James Blackman forced to start with started Deondre Francois down for count
with knee, might still lay somewhat reduced price vs. outclassed ULM. Note
Warhawks were outscored 110-24 in blowouts at Oklahoma & Auburn LY. After
facing the smothering Bama "D," Noles' elite corps of weapons welcome
defensively-weak ULM, which allowed 319 YR (8.2 ypc) in opener at Memphis.
Tread lightly, since FSU has Miami-Florida on deck. (DNP...SR: Florida State 1-0)

*South Carolina 38 - Missouri 31—Both attacks directed by blossoming
QBs and look downright scary. But must give decisive defensive edge to
Gamecocks, who limited potent NC State to only 7 pts. in 2nd H of 35-28 upset
win in Charlotte. On other hand, Mizzou "D" still suffered from blown tackles &
assignments in 72-43 win over FCS Missouri State. Gamecocks' electric WR/
returner Deebo Samuel (3 TDs vs. Wolfpack, including KO return) is arguably top
weapon on this field. Tigers only 5-6 SU at home vs. FBS foes since 2015. ESPN

opening day tuneups, still suggest laying fair price with SMU, which amassed
572 yds. in 34-21 victory in Denton LY. Watch for another huge game from
Mustangs' star, 1000-yd. WR Courtland Sutton (4 catches for 162 yds. LY), who
had just 2 grabs for 22 yds. vs. Stephen A. Austin. NTS OL has permitted a
whopping 45 sacks L1+Ys.

*CLEMSON 20 - Auburn 17—Defending national champ Clemson & new
starting QB 6-4 Kelly Bryant looked super-smooth in 56-3 romp over lower-rung
MAC foe Kent State. Still, anticipate another defensive war here, similar to LY's
19-13 slugfest on The Plains. Even if AU RB Kerryon Johnson is compromised
by a hamstring injury, HC Gus Malzahn has reinstated previously-suspended
playmakers, punishing RB Kamryn Pettway (1,224 YR LY) & key WR Kyle Davis.
AU's rust-shaking QB Jarrett Stidham should display some progress after
playing his first game in two years vs. Georgia Southern. TV-ESPN

*Georgia 27 - NOTRE DAME 23—Injury to Georgia's 6-5 soph QB Jacob
Eason (sprained knee; check status) a negative, but true frosh Jake Fromm was
solid in relief, completing 10 of 15 for 143 yds., with a TD and no ints. vs. App
State. Notre Dame easily executed Temple, rushing for 422 yds. and 5 TDs
against rebuilding Owl defense. Irish won't push around experienced Bulldog
"D" that returns 10 starters from a side that ranked 16th vs. the run LY.

*Mississippi State 35 - LOUISIANA TECH 24—With SEC heavyweights
LSU, Georgia & Auburn on horizon, MSU HC Dan Mullen is seeking a complete
effort vs. potent La Tech. Bulldogs athletic, dual-threat QB Nick Fitzgerald (hit
11 different receivers in 49-0 whitewash vs. FCS Charleston So) can exploit LT's
heavy-rebuilding back seven. La Tech's soph QB J'Mar Smith will be hardpressed
find a rhythm vs. MSU. Skip Holtz's crew led just 31-24 in 4th Q before
scoring 21 straight pts. vs. depth-shy N'western State Demons

*OHIO STATE 41 - Oklahoma 30—Ohio State labored a while in its 49-21
victory at Indiana. But the Buckeyes got a better test than did Oklahoma (56-
7 vs. UTEP), as QB Baker Mayfield (19 of 20 in just 2 Qs) might as well have been
passing vs. air. The Buckeyes were burned for 420 aerial yards by the Hoosiers
before tightening the screws (36-7 second half). With proven senior QBs on
each side in this one, give edge to Urban Meyer over rookie HC Lincoln Riley and
to the more productive Buckeye ground game.

*SOUTHERN CAL 31 - Stanford 30—With Stanford having an extra week
to prepare following 62-7 dismantling of Rice in Australia, willing to "take" with
the "Tree," which is a righteous 11-3 vs. spread last 14 vs. USC. Stanford's nowhealthy
QB Keller Chryst (& shifty jr. RB Byrce Love) equipped to keep pace with
Trojan field general Sam Darnold & his young WR corps. USC attack has no field
day vs. "Tree's" blanket-covering secondary. Troy "D" allowed Western Michigan
to roll up 263 YR. Not good.

*IDAHO 40 - Unlv 27—A la Floyd Patterson when donning sunglasses and
a fake beard in the early 60s after getting KO'd by Sonny Liston, UNLV might
want to go similarly incognito to escape town after historic humiliation vs. 45-
point dog Howard. The Kibbie Dome is a proper venue in which to hide, but
unfortunately Rebs must bring their roadkill "D" that allowed the FCS Bison to
gain 309 YR. Capable QB Linehan led undervalued Idaho to 8 straight covers
and a bowl romp past MW CSU to end 2016.

*OREGON STATE 28 - Minnesota 23—Even though juco QB Jake Luton
(3 TDs, 4 ints.) has had a mixed start to his OSU career, he's flashed more
playmaking ability than Minnesota's Rhoda/Croft tandem. And the Gophers
missed 2 of 3 FGs in a non-covering 17-7 victory vs. Buffalo. The Beavers
struggled to put away an athletic, undervalued Portland State last week, winning
only 35-32.

*Utah 28 - BYU 21—Utah has dominated recent series with in-state rival
BYU, taking 6 straight meetings. Utes' soph QB Tyler Huntley, who got the nod
over incumbent sr. Troy Williams, looked sharp. Huntley, who's a better fit for
new o.c. Troy Taylor's scheme, connected on 23 of 32 passes, including 10 to
Oregon 6-3 grad transfer WR Darren Carrington, in tuneup vs. N. Dakota. BYU
gained just 365 yds. vs. Portland St. and then was held to 97 yds. by LSU last
week, as QB Tanner Mangum has yet to regain his 2015 form.

*ARIZONA 31 - Houston 26—Since this is UH's opener after contest vs.
UTSA was postponed due to Hurricane Harvey, interested in supporting wellprepared
U of A, which got to rest many starters in 2nd H of 62-24 mashing of
Northern Arizona. Wildcats' effective 6-3 jr. dual-threat QB Brandon Dawkins
can trade blows with Cougs' new triggerman Kyle Allen (via Texas A&M) vs. UH
secondary, which lost both CBs to the NFL TY. U of A has captured 19 straight
non-conference home games! (DNP...SR: Tied 1-1)

*WASHINGTON STATE 30 - Boise State 19—Possible QB controversy
brewing at Boise after HC Harsin yanked starter Rypien in favor of backup
Cozart, who led game-clinching drive last week vs. Troy. No such issues at
Wazzu with sr. Falk, who almost pitched a perfect game (33 of 39 with 3 TDP)
in opening cruise past Montana State. Margin of error was slim between these
two in LY's 3-point Bronco win on blue carpet, so if Boise "O" a bit out of synch,
Mike Leach can get his revenge.
