Colorado Snow Storm in mid May

in #colorado8 years ago

We had our last big adventure last month in Colorado. We stayed in a little cabin on the outskirts of Nederland- Moon Creek Cabin🌲 It was a beautiful place in the mountains that was quaint and had lots of solitude. There was a little creek behind the cabin that we could explore.

The first day we went to Estes Park and it was a beautiful sunny day🌞 We ate lunch, explored in town, and even found a county road to have fun in the Jeep.

That night it snowed about a foot deep. We could not believe in the middle of May that we had a foot of snow! Traveling to Colorado in the past I know it is still cool during this time of year and even have ran into a little snow in Telluride before. I had not packed for snow, but we made due by layering and my son had brought a couple of stocking hats they Leyna could use. The outside patio table had held the snow perfectly and my daughter starting calling it her Colorado snow cake.

That day it really starting come down heavy and we had lost power in the night. Luckily, we had a wood burning fire place and our cooking stove was gas. I made breakfast and we played outside a little bit. The snow continued to pile up on everything.

Around lunch time, we decided to go to town to get some pizza. The county had already plowed the road and we knew we would be fine in the Jeep. When we got on the main road things got a little scary. There was a car full of girls who was stuck on a curved hill, trying to get traction. My husband got out of the Jeep and helped them turn around so they could get back to where they came from. The next curve brought us to a horrendous sight- there was a vehicle on its side!! Another driver had just arrived to the scene and my husband stopped and asked if they were still in the vehicle. They man shouted yes and my husband Immediately sprung into action. Between the two of them, they were able to pull out the distressed man out of the exposed car door. He had a bloody face due to the air bag going off and he was in extreme shock. My husband brought him over to the Jeep and had him sit down. I managed to find a roll of paper towels and we helped him stop some of the bleeding. The other man who had stopped and helped called 911. The distressed man just kept thanking my husband over and over and was appreciative for his rescuers. During All this activity, traffic was still coming around the corner and I was scared another accident was going to happen. We waited until police arrived and decided to move our Jeep due to the spot we were on on the side of the road. The snow continued to fall and even though the roads had been plowed, road conditions were slick and getting worse.IMG_0625.JPG

We finally made our way to Backcountry Pizza in Nederland, which ended up being a very good place to hang in the storm. The food was excellent and portions were huge. Definitely worth checking out if you are ever in the area. They also had many beers available on tap or by the bottle. The playlist playing in the back ground was very eclectic rock/ punk mix which was sweet as you were able to play an oldschool pinball or Mrs Pacman arcade game. The snow continued to to fall so we decided it was time to head back to the cabin.

On our way back up the mountain, we came to a big line of traffic. We waited as others were getting out of their cars and going on up the road to see what was going on. After 20 minutes we stopped a man who was on his way back to his car. It seemed two cars had gone in the ditch on both sides of the switchback and roads conditions were so bad cars were sliding everywhere out of control. We went back into town to ask for another way home, but no luck. We would have to go all the way back to Boulder(40 miles) then take a detour an hour out of our way. We decided to go back to where the backed up traffic was and wait for the most direct route to our cabin. After another 20 minutes, we were on our way back to our cabin☺️
We finally reached our county road and started the uphill incline. About a quarter way up, we were stopped by an ambulance. It seems they received a 911 call on a elderly person having chest pains and they needed us to back down to the road so the medical entourage, fire trucks, and snow plow would be able to get back down the road. Luckily my husband is an awesome driver and we had no issues. After waiting nearly 30 minutes, a pick up pulled up to the road. We flagged him down to let him know what was going on. It ended up being the owner of our cabin, they lived down the road a little bit from where we were staying. He had already plowed our driveway( very sweet couple) and decided to go check on the neighbor after speaking to us for a while. He stated in his 9 years of living in Nederland, this was the latest in the year record snowfall he had experienced. Another 15 minutes went by and a plow truck started coming down the road and he was not pleased where we were parked. He whipped right around, trying to scare us we suspect, and parked the big truck right next to the Jeep. About that time, the ambulance team started making their way down the road and we motioned toward them to let him know what was going on. What an exciting day!!!
We had finally made it to the cabin and decided to rest for the evening watching movies and eating leftovers from the best pizza joint in town. The power was back on and the snow had let up a little bit, but we had reached about 2&1/2 feet of snow for the day!!

The next morning we woke up to another 1/2 inch of snow- making the total snow fall of about 3 feet! As we were getting ready, the power went off again. It was time to leave our cabin life behind- off to Boulder!!! What memories we were able to share with both of our children. It was not what we had expected, but we had some new adventures that we will never forget- Leyna enjoying her Colorado snow cake, Uriah having no choice but to interact with the family due to no internet, and my heroic husband helping others in need💕 Out of all of our trips to Colorado, this was a special one not only due to our family being together again for a vacation, but seeing the best qualities out of our family shine through brilliantly!!!😍🌨🏔
