What is your favorite “F” word? My favorite “F” word has got nothing to do with a Fendi handbag but it has everything to do with foreign language exchange. Foreign language exchange partners are such a blessing. My life before the existence of foreign language exchange partners was dull and uneventful. My life after them will never be the same again. It’s like having a drug addiction relapse. In order to sleep well, I must tease someone every single day.

German Foreign Language Exchange (GFLE)

GFLE: Would you like to join me for lunch?
Me: I know you’re very grateful to me but please do not bother giving me a gift.
GFLE: Why?
Me: Because the word “gift” in German means poison.
If your German language exchange partner happened to be a medical doctor, this might be the possible reply.
German Doctor: Ah, but it is only the dosage that makes the poison! (Basic Toxicology 101)
Me: Occupational hazard! 😅 😅 😅

Spanish Foreign Language Exchange (SFLE)

Me: Do you know a gold digger means different thing to different people?

SFLE: Really? How so?
Me: In Cantonese, 挖金 (wat kam) or dig for gold means digging boogers. Do you have similar expression in Spanish?

SFLE: Well, in Spanish, this particular action is known as buscar petróleo. Petroleum is after all another form of gold. Black gold!
Me: Viva España!

Japanese Foreign Language Exchange (JFLE)

Me: Do you have a pet at home?
JFLE: Yes, I have a cute puppy.
Me: Awww! Can I come over to take a look?
JFLE: Uhmm… Cough! Cough! Turned bright red.

Actually, I’ve just committed a grave social faux pas. Japanese people value their privacy a lot. Inviting yourself over to an opposite gender’s place to take a look at their pet is equivalent to asking someone over for a Netflix and chill session.
