Detecting black holes
Some binary star systems may contain a star that has turned into a black hole. Gas from the other star would swirl around the black hole before being pulled into it, giving off high- energy radiation, including x-rays.
• x-rays cannot travel through Earth's atmosphere, so they are studied by satellite that send information back to Earth.
.
•. A hot supergiant star in the Cygnus constellation has an invisible companion called Cygnus X-1. It is probably a black hole.
• There are many other suspected black holes, including a giant one at the centre of our galaxy.
