Challenge: What are you doing to claim food sovereignty for yourself or your community, and why?

in #community6 years ago (edited)

Reading @wwf's prediction of an impending crash yesterday was a somber reminder for me of the lessons that my mentors instilled in me. We, as a global community, are in desperate times. We as a human species must learn to grow our own food, share our abundance and we need to plant a LOT of trees.

There may come a time when petroleum is no longer cheap. There may come a time when we no longer have easy access to industrial food. There may come a time when systems break down. Our earth is in a state of rapid desertification.

This challenge is a personal reminder to myself about spreading a message of the need for resilience, freedom, community and responsibility. HSCO can be a medium for this message. But we don't need to be desperate, we need to make change. And that change can be joyous and fulfilling while building resilience and independence.

I hope that this challenge can inspire us to inspire each other, share knowledge, resources and solutions. Inform those that are un-informed. Help those that need help. I personally am so past complaining about our problems. I am past anger. I am ready for action and ready to make a difference in our world. How well can we tune our message? How far can we send our message? How many can we inspire to choose resilience?

Well this really got me thinking and assessing where we're at in this regard. I realise we've a long way to go!
Here's my entry, https://steemit.com/homesteading/@minismallholding/is-food-sovereignty-possible-in-a-harsh-climate-iwxwwxzr
now I'm off to read some more of the other entries...

Wonderful challenge! I hope it brings out lots of knowledge regarding food sovereignty.
Here's my entry with my bits of knowledge and what I've been doing to gain food sovereignty https://steemit.com/homesteading/@porters/a-challenge-what-are-you-doing-to-claim-food-sovereignty-for-yourself-or-your-community-and-why-my-response

Thank you for entering this challenge! I look forward to reading your post :)

A fantastic challenge! Great stuff. Loving everyone's great submissions.

We decided to submit for this very interesting challenge.

We do not grow food at eco-locals.com but we do specialize in developing tools and programs to promote sustainability.

We made our Eco-$aver Potluck program in response to your #foodsovereignty challenge.

We hope that community members band together to teach their community about the local food and items they make.

The potlucks center around local ingredients and bringing home enough left-overs for a week of meals. There is a bunch of inspiration in our post to start thinking about piecing meals together.

Thanks again for the thought-proving content, Homesteader's Coop !

Thank you for joining our challenge @eco-locals :) This sounds very interesting... I am heading over now to read about your potluck program. I do like the sound of local ingredients in potlucks.. that's my favorite kind! Hanging out with farmers and homesteaders, usually that's how it goes. If only everyone could know the joy!

I'm in - writing now and will post tomorrow. x

I am very much looking forward to it :)

I might have to respond in 2 articles for readability lol...

You must have a lot to say! I am certainly looking forward to reading your entry :)

Yeah, we do a lot! It's not just us but our whole community that does it

That is super admirable :)

Would love to share what I've been doing just in my own backyard. We have quite a few limitations as it's a rented property. The soil was so poor initially and it's taken a long time to build up just a few vegie gardens.

And I've never found the time to share how the stormwater council channel area, in the far backyard has gradually become more like a mini-rainforest. It would be great to find the time NOW or in the next week to document it for this FANTASTIC challenge @homesteaderscoop. ♥︎♥︎⚖️♥︎♥︎

A min-rainforest! I'd love to hear more :)

Oh very nice. This dovetails quite well with a post I was planning on making anyways, so with a little re-tooling, no problem!

Question though: What would you like the initial tag to be? Should I just aim it at naturalmedicine, or would you prefer something else?

I am glad to hear it @yestomorrow. I am very much looking forward to your post.

Please feel free to tag your post with anything you like :) We don't have an official community tag yet. If you link your response in this post I will be able to find it.

Ooh This is a nice little challenge. I like how this can really become something everyone can learn from or be inspired from. Sharing resilience and independence ideas in this way is really awesome! We sure will learn from eachother.

Sorry I didn't see this earlier!

Thanks @senorcoconut! That is great feedback :)

Thanks and you're welcome... not sure if I can make time to enter the challenge myself right now though. I'll check the deadline again
