Getting Girls Interested into Pursuing a Job in Computer Science

in #computer7 years ago

The national rate of women working in computer science is just 17%, the other 83% being men. These statistics have to be changed.

There are no specific jobs that are in the computer programming industry. Myself, I have been interested in the computer programming at a young age, but I have been influenced by my close friends and family. These are 3 steps that helped me get interested into computer programming.

  1. Start at a young age. When you grow up, you immediately think of a job you want to have, thinking they're easy. If you start programming at a young age, it will become easier for you, in the future, remembering all the commands and learning new languages.

  1. Start with tutorials. Some of these tutorials helped me a lot, learning how to program
  • Scratch (https://scratch.mit.edu/) : Scratch is a free website for beginners who want to drag and drop blocks to make their own games. It's a great place to start, but it's very different from the programming that you type.
  • Codecademy (https://www.codecademy.com/learn): a free online website, that teaches multiple programming languages like HTML & CSS, Ruby, Javascript and more. It is free, but you can buy a premium access for better learning.
  • FreeCodeCamp (https://www.freecodecamp.org/): Its name tells you it's free. If you stuck, they have hints, and it will lead adults to the criteria of a success in programming. If you're stuck, they have a live chat with kind people that can help you.
  • Mackenzie Child 12-12 challenge (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL23ZvcdS3XPLNdRYB_QyomQsShx59tpc-): Mackenzie Child's 12 and 12 challenge is when he builds 12 apps using ruby on rails. You can copy along while learning how to use ruby on rails, and making your own website!
  • Udemy (https://www.udemy.com/courses/search/?q=Computer%20Programming&src=ukw&p=1&price=price-free): There are many free tutorials that teach you various programming languages, but Udemy also provides courses that cost money, but they teach lots, some of them including how to make your own business while coding your own website.

3.Join Technovation! Where girls from the age of 10-18 build an app throughout 12 weeks that will help the world! Must it be food insecurity, to tutor app, girls will compete and pitch at their regional competition! The best teams will move on to the final World Pitch, where they pitch with girls that won from other countries! This brings all girls around the world together, to learn how to create their own app, and create a market plan to make their business successful! Learn more here https://technovationchallenge.org/

And that's it! Hopefully, this post has taught you some tips for getting your child (or yourself!) into computer programming!
