Dumpster Rental Made Easy!
Every homeowner has at one time or another dealt with construction work. From a simple bathroom renovation to an emergency repair, one of the biggest expenses (and headaches) you will encounter is the removal of construction debris.
The most cost-effective and convenient way to quickly remove construction debris is to rent an open top dumpster. Some people call them roll-offs others call them trash bins, but in the end you were paying for a big metal box that you can use to throw your trash into.
Dumpsters are measured in cubic yards. Traditionally there are three dumpsters sizes used for construction work: 10, 20 and 30 cubic yards. There are slight variations - for example some dumpster companies may have a 12 or 15 yard containers available. For some simplicity’s sake, we will stick to the aforementioned container sizes.
If you’re working with the contractor, they most likely will be able to tell you the size of dumpster you will need. Their years of experience will give them a pretty good idea of just how much debris you were going to generate. If you are doing the work yourself, your best bet is to discuss with the dumpster rental company what you were trying to accomplish. You do not want to pay for more than you need, but at the same time, you don’t want to risk ordering too small of a dumpster and then being forced to order another one.
Once you have ordered your dumpster you need to prepare. Have four small pieces of scrap wood on hand to place under the dumpster wheels (the driver will do this for you). This will prevent damage from your driveway. Make sure that your driveway is of ample size to handle both the dumpster and the truck dropping it off. Your dumpster company should be able to help you to figure out if you have sufficient space. Also make note of any low hanging wires or trees. In order to place the dumpster, a boom is lifted and the dumpster slides off. Overhead wires or low hanging trees can pose a danger.
If you do not have a driveway or your driveway is too small to handle a dumpster you will need to place the container in the street. Check with your town to see what is required of you. Often times a permit will be required. The town should provide you with temporary no parking signs so that there will be room for the truck to place the dumpster correctly. Again, your dumpster rental company will be able to assist you with this.
The Biggest concern of most homeowners, understandably, is cost. Getting rid of garbage is expensive. When you order your dumpster, it will come with a tonnage limit. In simple terms, you pay a flat rate for delivery and removal of the dumpster up to a certain weight limit. If you exceed this weight you will be charged on a prorated basis for the additional disposal costs. Make sure you know upfront what these costs will be.
Costs vary widely state-by-state and even county by county. Make certain that when you order your dumpster you know exactly what is and is not allowed to be placed inside. Paint, batteries, tires, anything toxic, dirt in many other items are typically prohibited.
