100 Situps Challenge!

We had so much fun with the Burpee Challenge that it's time for a new challenge. Some people were, understandably, a little intimidated with the 100 Burpee Challenge, so this challenge has a way that almost everyone can participate!

What Is It?

The Challenge is to complete 100 Situps, in order to build strength and stamina in the core. But how you do this, depends on your abilities:

  • Beginners: Accumulate 100 Situps throughout the week before the contest deadline
  • Intermediate: Accumulate 100 Situps every other day (beginning the day after this post), for a total of 300 Situps for the week (you can start late, but realize you have to complete 300 before the deadline)
  • Advanced: Accumulate 100 Situps a day (beginning the day after this post), for a total of 600 Situps throughout the course of the week (you can start late, but realize you have to accumulate 600 before the deadline)
Everyone has an equal chance of winning as long as you complete your chosen Challenge level!

A Situp?

Nothing too technical here, we call this a Hands-To-Laces Sit-up:

My Original Photo

  • At the top of the Situp, you are seated on the floor with your shoulders stacked over your hips
  • Pull your belly button toward your spine, as you lie back on the floor with control
  • Reach arms overhead to touch the floor
  • To initiate the Situp, reach your arms toward your feet as you Situp
  • Attempt to touch your shoelaces, if possible

Why Should I?

Good question! The importance of a strong core cannot be overstated. Only from a strong center can we build strength in the extremities. A weak core will be the weak link in your armour. If you try to strengthen the extremities using loads beyond which your core is able to withstand, then you're putting yourself at risk for injury, most likely a back injury. Source We live in a society where we spend the majority of our time sitting, and usually not in a good position. As a result, the abdominals are weak. The hip flexors and hamstrings are tight. And the result is back pain. You can combat this by strengthening your abdominals and stretching hip flexors, glutes and hamstrings. Source

Never Too Old

And don't think this is only for young, fit people like my model above. All ages and fitness levels can do a Situp. If you struggle with it, let me know and we can come up with a scaling option together. I want EVERYONE to be able to participate! No excuses. But, do work within your abilities by choosing the appropriate skill level. And do get the approval from your doctor before starting any exercise regiment.

Should check out @donatello, he does a dance and fitness contest too, maybe work out a crossposting ;)

Thanks! I'm not really sure what crossposting is though...

Killin' it, Coach. The admin of this account (@ameliabartlett) will go for the TOP SPOT, racking up 600 situps this week even though I haven't done a situp in a year... Let's do this.

You've been upvoted and resteemed as part of the #LadiesofSteemit initiative. Keep up the great work!

Although I'm obviously not competing in this competition, I'm still participating and commit to those 600 situps right along with ya!

About to get those situps done! Also, you're a part of my Weekly Curation Journal, keep up the great work! 🎈

Thank you @ameliabartlett!!!! Your support has been so encouraging and motivating. I got my 100 done today. How'd yours go?

Do only sit-ups count or do other variations work too?

I don't have situps in my routine but I have Russian Twists, V-Ups, and machine crunches in there

I'll give ya the V-ups and Machine Crunches for sure!

Hi @cygon! Did ya get your 100 reps in?

I'm up to 200 for the week!

Did you meet your goal @cygon?

I hit 300, but I'll be honest I really should probably be in the advance group.

Intermediate for me. I was doing crunches before. Not sure if I can manage so many situps. I'm committing to 50 a day. Here we go!!!!

You got this, and maybe a second win!

Woohoo! Got in my 300 for the week.

At some point I realized I was doing some without reaching arms overhead. Then I was curious if I was using momentum from my arms to assist with the sit-up. Then I tried to minimize that effect. I was surprised I was able to touch my laces though that was a pleasant surprise.

Excellent work @eonwarped! You just may have two consecutive wins; we shall see!

There are benefits to all different variations of sit-ups, and I suggest mixing them up. Doing them strict helps build strength, as does adding in the arms overhead (as long as you do so with strict movement), but using the arms for momentum allows you to do greater volume (more work done in less time equals higher intensity). It’s comparable to training both strict pull-ups AND kipping pull-ups. Do ‘em all!

Yeah buddy! Happy to see you stop by PYPT! This is great stuff, helpful stuff, even the couch potatoes appreciate it deep down.

Looking forward to some kind of St Louis Meetup soon. :)

Lol, I think you may be right....deep, deep down. Lol.

Yeah, I'd love to get in on a St. Louis meetup! Let me know if and when, or if you need help (not that I know anything about it, but just willing to help any way I can).

yes. happy to hear that. maybe we can chip away at some planning on discord. @Sykochica is in town and she has some friends on steemit here. That's about 3 or more of us. We'll find the time. Have a great weekend!

I'll go for the advanced! Starting today... here we go!

Sweet! I don't think we've met yet @lenadr. Welcome!

Glad to see you challenge yourself! I be doing them along with ya!

How'd your first day of 100 Situps go @lenadr?

So far, so good. I have two days done now. I break them up into three sets: 50, 30, and 20, with a couple minutes rest between them.
My upper abs are actually a bit sore! Yay!

Nice! I have two days done as well. Today has just started for me. The first day I did 100 unbroken. Day 2 was, like yours, broken into sets with a little rest between. And, ya, my abs are a little sore too...strong, I meant to say strong! Lol

Lol yes, strong, not sore. XD Unbroken? Wow, that's nuts!

Update: I did 100 unbroken today!! I took it a lot slower than the past two days, but I was able to just keep plugging away. Okay, now I'm sore. LOL

Hahaha, I was gonna comment that I bet you can do it, but you already did! Good for you! I also got my 100 in for today. Keep pluggin'.

Hooray, I did all of them! 600 situps. Dang! Although after my last 100 today I tried to do a toes-to-bar and I couldn't. Not a single one.
I think my tummy may need a day or two to rest. HA!
That was a fun challenge. Thanks for posting!!

Oh no! Recovery is in order 😮. I'm glad you joined us and had fun! The winner will be announced soon!

And I'm glad we've connected. What discord server do you hang out on? And THANK YOU for the post-workout pic gift!

Hmm... tempting.. can I do that submerged under water in a pool? Although i think that kinda defeats the purpose..

Lol, that may defeat the purpose somewhat, but would be interesting and fun for sure!

Just do it! Pick a level and join us!

Alright I am just seeing this now, let's see how many I can get in :)
