Hi there, this seems tricky. But I'm going to say the first is fake. The complexity to electrify that sconce would be extremely hard as if this was cast during an antiquity period the unlikely the arms would have been hollow. Modern casting would have allowed these to be hollow for this purpose.
Thats my theory.

Yay I actually got it right basically for the right reasons as well. Pity i didn't win :( Still a cool competition :)

You were very close to being correct. Actually, now that we are so far in the 2000's, an antique is anything from 1917, and they had electricity then! Before then, there were quite a few lights that ran on gas, and these would have had hollow arms too.

If a light has those solid arms you are talking of, you know they are SUPER old, and definitely date back to before 1820.
