COVID-19: police response and large fines in Ontario

The police can now intervene in Ontario by distributing heavy fines to enforce certain measures decreed in the wake of the recent declaration of health emergency in this province, in order to counter the spread of COVID-19.

"Although voluntary compliance is always preferred, under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act, there are consequences for individuals and businesses who choose to challenge the Act while it is in force. in force, "said the Ontario Provincial Police in a statement on Friday evening.

"Contravening the expert opinion of the Chief Medical Officer of Health to close certain businesses and institutions and limit gatherings to 50 people or less, the Provincial Offenses Act has been updated to include three offenses to be applied by the police, as well as [for] setting fines for each offense. "

The OPP noted that the fines will range from $ 750 to $ 500,000, with the latter amount going to businesses after appearing in court.

A state of health emergency in Ontario was declared Tuesday by Premier Doug Ford. The legislation was subsequently amended accordingly and the cooperation of the police was requested.

The tickets that may be subject to police intervention relate in particular to the order to close bars and restaurants (except for deliveries and take-out orders), all places offering indoor leisure programs, all public libraries, all private schools and all licensed child care centers.
