Maria Mercader Dies Of COVID-19

Longtime CBS journalist Maria Mercader has died. It is reported that she was a victim of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

She was on a leave from the network for medical reasons when she contracted the virus.

Her passing took place at the age of 54.

New York is ravaged by the virus. Thus far, there are 1,000 deaths in the New York City area and the total is rising.

She was part of the team for the successful "CBS Sunday Morning"> For her work there, she won a Business Emmy in 2004.

Dan Rather called her loss "a hit to the heart".

People with underlying health issues are apt to be most affected by the virus. For this reason, the elderly are susceptible to being hit hard. We see the death rate higher in this group.

Mercader obviously was not elderly being only 54. She did, however, battle cancer for 20 years. As stated, she was already on medical leave for an undisclosed condition.

Unfortunately, this situation is going to continue in many areas of the world. In the United States, we are likely looking at another month of increasing daily death rates.

This is going to keep businesses while taxing emergency services along with hospitals. It is also likely that we see the virus jump from city-to-city. New York is the barrel now but is will not be the last one. A repeat is likely in a Boston or Philadelphia.

A sad situation all around.
