ANXIETY ruled my life, then I found the BEST medicine EVER - And now I'm an Artist.

in #creative7 years ago

Creativity. I believe we were ALL born with creative abilities, just like we were all born with a heart. Unlike the heart however, creativity requires a little self-exploration to be discovered. It is the perfect “medicine” for when we need to heal emotionally coupled with one of my favourite quotes from Albert Einstein:

Creativity is embedded into our souls. It is a snippet of ourselves we can show to the world, which reflects who we truly are without the use of everyday conversation. It may come in the form of a painting, writing stories or poetry, acting, sculpting, musical talents, carving or drawing to name a few examples.

I have enjoyed getting creative in the past, but it wasn’t until my 38th year that I REALLY started to explore my creative side. I was facing a time in my life where I was in a job where I felt EXHAUSTED as soon as I would wake from an 8hr sleep (do you know that feeling?). My days were lived out in a constant state of anxiety and fear, plus I was healing from a broken heart - this emotional struggle was the perfect recipe which forced me to find an activity I enjoyed in order to disconnect from MYSELF and seek some peace. That is when I tried my hand at a craft known as Macrame. Upon practicing the craft of macrame my world changed. My soul felt nourished and my heart full. In fact, rather than disconnecting from myself, it’s where I TRULY CONNECTED with myself and the start of a beautiful healing journey.

What is Macrame? And what makes me an Artist?

Well Macrame aka Fibre Art, in its most simplistic explanation, is the art of tying knots using different types of fibre such as cotton, wool, rope or twine. It stems waaay back to the 13th Century - the Arabians use to tie knots on the blankets of their camels and horses to prevent the loose threads becoming tangled. The craft was hugely popular during the 60-80's also. The aim is to create home décor pieces which are either functional, or simply pleasing to look at. Because I do not follow patterns (like most crafters do) and ALL my designs are created from my imagination, hence an Artist. Or more to the point an “Artisan” (an Artist creates for aesthetic purposes, and an Artisan creates functional pieces with an artistic flare). I do both.

So for those of you who were curious as to what I do, there you go :) I have been fortunate enough to throw away the 9-5 gig which did not serve me and transition into starting my own business ALL by exploring my creativity and ACTING on the opportunities which organically opened themselves up to me since discovering the art. I not only sell my pieces, and receive custom orders commercially and privately, I also teach the craft in group workshops as well as run my Etsy store online. I absolutely know I am living my purpose and maximising on how WONDERFUL life really is. Insert BIG HEART!

So if you have read this far, thank you Legends! I would love to hear if you have had a similar experience which has completely changed your path in life for the better. Or, if your are wanting to make that brave move to create a new life for yourself, what is stopping you? Please don't let fear or uncertainty stop you from living out your passions. Passion is purpose, and there is no failing when you live your purpose. Challenges - Yes. Failing- No.

Some examples below of previous work. Peace and Love to you ALL

ps - I look forward to learning how to format on here. This will do for now, being my 2nd post and all :)

Well done for making this your business. I usually just get told that there's no money to be made in art, just get a job! Not that I'd probably be much good at making money from art anyway as I'm terribly quiet and not great at communicating. I'm also slow at everything so it would take me too long to make anything!

Anyway, a big welcome to Steemit. You're obviously in really good hands with Matt as your guide!

I got busy and only just noticed this.
Great to see she's in good hands.
Beautiful work, Kristie.
We got your cousin up and running, so hopefully she sneaks under the tree soon and gets a running start :)
@minismallholding, there are still plenty there if you're heading to the city.

I rarely go near the city, especially at this time of year, but thank you, certainly would if I went that way.

It sounds like you're going to get all of South Australia here single handed Matt!

Naaaw @minismallholding , now that I've heard 3 negative self perceptions you hold for yourself, Please tell me 3 positive ones 🤗.

Quiet people are the deepest thinkers.

Being slow also probably means you are thorough

And I'm sure your communication skills are great when the environment you're is comfortable.

Thank you sincerely for your big welcome :)

I have to confess I'm a bit taken by surprise! I've never had anyone acknowledge what I would call the positives of the way I am. Yes, I do tend to be thorough, but those around me are more interested in speed than thoroughness, especially in the work place. It's also true that I'm fine at communication with my family and a few close friends who are now physically distant from me.

I'm not always sure that deep thinking is a good thing, I sometimes head down a rabbit hole!

Okay, 3 positives, that is a challenge! 🤔
Persistence. I keep plugging at things until they're done, no matter how long it takes.
I feel like I create things with my hands well. When everyone's buying things I'm looking to see if I can make it!
I think I do okay at writing too. I've been writing articles for a couple of magazines and for the first time hubby's encouraging me because he likes the cheques! 😂

Thank you for a lovely reply which has made me think more positively.

So many good vibes and blessings to you! I really really look forward to seeing some of your creations abd reading your articles. Peace and love 🙏

I recently convinced my sister to follow her passion and make money sharing her love of craft. YouTube is her outlet and the thing about making videos is you can take all the time you need, and it can all be sped up in the editing.
My niece is also onboard sharing her passion for crochet and she is building a nice little side income while she studies.
Both didn't think they could make money from their passion before they started.

Sometimes it's only our mind that holds us back from being the person we believe we are. You only get one chance to live this life. Just one.

I never thought the usefulness in making a video if you're slow. That's a very good point. I'm glad your sister and niece have so much support in you.

Thank you for sharing this. It's been eye opening to read about people making some money doing what they love.

Don't be shy about linking to your other stuff.

Oh, thanks @mattclarke. Not that I plan on using this space to promote my work, but any exposure helps, right? 😊

Wow your macrame is beautiful! Really like the owl piece in particular but I have to say I am really impressed with everything! That is so cool that you were able to follow your heart and dreams and are now making a living doing something you love - hey can we coin a new phrase and call that "making a loving"?

Thanks for being an original and creative content creator! You rock!

I'm totally on board with your new phrase! Nice one - Love it!

Yes yes... "Owlbert" was only just created a two weeks ago, and now found a new home only yesterday. The fellas love the owls I find. It's a "hoot" making them 😅.

Lovely to meet you Carl Totally Not A Bot Gnash!

Oh and I don't want to seem like I'm lurking here, but create the STEEM logo in macrame for the WIN!
I bet it would be a popular post and you might even get a few orders ;-)
steem_logo.png

Eeep, let me clarify... do you mean create a steem logo as the thumbnail for the blog I wrote about my macrame, or hashtag macrame? Thank you, AGAIN 😊

No, I mean use your gift and create the logo in macrame :-D I think a hanging piece would look nice don't you?

One thing you'll learn about crypto is there is plenty of disposable income ;-) And people are just looking for ways to spend their coins :-D

I've seen these things you call Macrame my entire life. Didn't know it had a name. When I was just a little dude, I used to actually leap from a chair, then grab onto a Macrame plant pot holder hanging from a hook on the ceiling. It wasn't the Macrame that broke that day though. No. Those things are solid. They should make ceiling hooks out of Macrame. Now that I've said it enough times and seem crazy... I will never forget the name.

Have a nice day!

Absolutely LOVE this story 😂🤣! At least you didn't break an arm or leg! So, in Australia it's pronounced "Ma-cra-may". In the US it's more like "Mak-ra-may"... just so it's embedded. Have a great day, too Ledge!

Actually, an american(some, not all, gotta be careful)might pronounce it like "Muh-kraim". Maybe "Mah-kra-mee". I'm Canadian, so having that French exposure along with the English meant I nailed it. Ma-cra-may is exactly how I read it. Fun word!

Ha, I remember doing macrame as a kid ( I think we made plant pot hangers) and recently made that connection again while working on a website project for an Australian fibre supplier.
You've probably used her if you've bought locally (Sydney) but maybe she's just a competitor. lol
And it's great you've been able to kick the 9-5 doing something you love. I quit the 9-5 a few years ago in search of a more creative life and are so glad I did.
Someone recently asked me if I was an artist after coloring in a pigeon for a community art project and I quickly said 'No'. But on reflection, I should have replied 'I am a creative' :-D
