The Never-Ending Sweater Project

Getting there... but a long way to go still

About a year ago, my son asked me if I could knit him a "drug rug" kind of sweater. You know, like the Mexican blanket sweaters?

I used to knit like ALL THE TIME. Even taught group classes at a craft store. My friend Judy taught me how to knit in college, and it took no time at all for me to be completely hooked.

Sweaters, scarves, mittens... they'd all fall from my needles as fast as I could replenish my yarn stash.

Once I had kids, it got even more addicting. I figured out how to change colors, work intarsia, and plot out designs on graph paper. A rooster, a train, a ballerina... I even made ponchos for all my daughter's friends as party favors for her birthday party once.

I even tried to knit custom sweater for kids! (Well, until a friend pointed out that my hourly wage worked out to a couple of cents!)

Of course, back then, I watched a lot of TV, didn't own a business, and we took frequent long car rides. Knitting was a good way to keep my hands busy and redeem the time I spent watching.

Then as suddenly as the knitting bug bit me, it vanished. For more than a decade, I didn't knit - couldn't even imagine wanting to, especially when there was so much work to do on my business. The internet had come, and that gave me even more distractions from knitting - even if I'd wanted to pick up the needles again.

Once I divorced, I didn't have a TV anymore. I drove everywhere myself. I had a business that satisfied my creative impulses. All that made knitting even less enticing.

Until my son asked :). I figured that evenings when I'm up visiting the kids and we're watching something on Netflix, that'd be a good time to create something - especially because he asked.

This thing's taking forever. I don't knit every chance I get, which is probably part of the issue. But it's coming along. The back's done, the front is close. The sleeves will be worked at the same time, so they'll go pretty fast. I'll post a pic when it's complete, if you'd like to see it.
