Arionum has been going strong for a few weeks now and a lot has happened. The second offical Arionum mining pool went live (aro.cool) and just in the last few days, the AroDev released the source code for the alpha version of the Arionum mining pool. Within hours we had the first community built pool up and running (aro.hase.rs). With all this mining action happening, it really is time to start up your very own Arionum miner. If you have a Windows machine, keep reading and we'll walk-through how to get started. If you are running a Linux machine feel free to take a look at my previous post outlining instructions here: Linux Instructions

Installing Dependencies

The prebuilt Java miner executable only requires one dependency to be installed, JAVA JDE 8 64 bit. To download this program follow this link: https://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Click the link to install the Windows Offline (64-bit) version. It is critical that you download the 64-bit version. If you don't the miner will not function. In the screen below, it is the second from the bottom download:

After you download the exe file, double click to run. You should see a screen similar to this.

Click through the installation instructions to install Java 8 JDE (64-bit). The last screen should look like this.

That's all of the dependencies, restart your computer and you are ready to run the miner.

Running the Miner

It's time to start your miner! Go to this link: https://github.com/ProgrammerDan/arionum-java/releases to download the Arionum Java Miner. The downloads will be listed at the top of the page. There are three options; AVX, AVX2 and the non avx exe files.

You'll need to determine whether your CPU supports AVX or AVX2 or doesn't support to see which exe to use. AVX supported chips are listed below (Note: if your CPU supports AVX but, not AVX2, download both the AVX and non AVX version and try both, the non-AVX may be faster)

And here are AVX2 chips

If you still aren't sure whether your CPU supports AVX or AVX2 you can check using this tool CPU-Z

Once you have determined which exe file to use, just download the file and run. You will be prompted with the following questions:

First you will be asked if you would like to generate a local config file. Typing 'y' means you won't have to go through these questions every time you open the miner.

Next you will be asked whether you would like to solo or pool mine. Pool mining is the easier set up and unless you have some serious CPU power you won't get anywhere solo mining. So type 'pool'

Next you will be asked which pool you would like to mine on. To mine on the offical arionum pool leave this field blank. If you would like to mine on the small miner pool or the community built pool type 'http://aro.cool' or 'http://aro.hashe.rs'

Next you will be asked for your Arionum wallet address. Copy it here. Be sure it is correct or you will be mining for no one.

The next prompt will ask how many hashers to run. It will default to the max number but, you can decrease if you would like. You will need to play with this number in your config file to determine the optimal number of hashers for your system. Hint: More is not always better.

Then you'll be asked to activate colors... They look pretty.

Lastly, you'll be asked to name your miner, this is useful if you are planning to create a node to monitor statistics. Name it as you like.

Your setting should look something like this

Click enter and you should be mining, that's it you're now part of the team! AN active miner will start to scroll down the screen like the screen below, if it stops scrolling or says it encountered a fatal error, close the program and open again.

Editing your Config file

If ever you need to modify the configurations you just entered above, you can do so by editing the config.cfg file. This file will be created if you answer 'y' to the first question above. It will be stored in the directory where you run the java miner executable file. In my case it was in the downloads folder.

To edit this file, right click on it and open with notepad or notepad++. It should look something like this.

You can now edit any of the parameters. Each line is as follows:

  1. solo/pool mode
  2. pool url you are mining with
  3. Your wallet address
  4. Number of hashers you are using (edit this to see if you get any hashing boost from lowering the number of hashers)
  5. Miner mode (Don't mess with this, should say standard)
  6. Colors enables? True/False
  7. Miner ID

Be careful modifying this file, if you mess it up, your miner won't run.

Thanks for the article! I've been mining using the official miner for a few days now (just on my skylake i7) and wondered what the benefits of going through the extra hoops to set up this miner were. Slightly improved hash rate and more settings? Or am I missing something...

That's right, I see about 4 h/s using the built-in miner and about 11 h/s using the Java miner. Pretty substantial increase for me.

Fantastic,I'm seeing around 5/s so hoping for a decent increase too. Many thanks !

Well this is such heavy detail, but very well explained. Great job man.

Thanks, good luck mining!

This is a very interesting project!

It sure is! I've really enjoyed following it! Great community and Devs and gives the average guy an opportunity to mine. I was able to put an 8 year old laptop to work mining and made about 30 ARO in one day.
