How to Pick a Crypto Portfolio

in #crypto7 years ago (edited)

Note: This article assumes you have a current understanding of cryptocurrencies. I may write more articles concerning the basics of cryptos and specific coins I am following. The following is not financial advice, you are responsible for your own profits and losses. I do own several of the coins listed.

I will be using CryptoCompare.com to create the portfolios. Feel free to create your own to track your progress!

This is by no means a comprehensive list of portfolios. I did this more as a way to crystalize my own ideas about the crypto space. If you have a better portfolio, awesome :-)

Sectors to focus on in 2018: Dividends, Platform, Privacy, Exchange

Dividend coins
Coins that offer crypto dividends in the form of forks and/or airdrops. Currently Bitcoin is the most popular coin to fork, giving you a percentage of new forked coins for every bitcoin you hold in your wallet. You earn more coins simply by holding dividend coins.

Platform coins
Coins that serve as a platform for tokens. This means that tokens will "ride" on the platforms codebase. For example, all ERC20 tokens are dependent on Ethereum to function.

Privacy coins
Self explaining, these coins aim to obscure the sender, receiver, and the amount of coins that are being transmitted. May use aspects of the TOR protocol to facilitate transactions.

Exchange Coins
Coins that are either required to use an online exchange, or decrease fees on the exchange. Relatively new, exchange coins may be required to use decentralized exchanges in the future.

Conservative Portfolio - Minimum risk, Long term potential, Set it and Forget it

Bitcoin - Dividends
Ethereum - Platform
Litecoin - Like a test net for Bitcoin
Ripple - Fast, designed for institutions

The beginners portfolio. This group of coins are mostly available on Coinbase (with the exception of Ripple) and in the top 10 cryptos by trading volume. Definitely not the most exciting portfolio but great if you do not plan on monitoring your portfolio 24/7. Currently, Coinbase does not offer an exchange coin.

Balanced Portfolio - Balanced based on the above criteria

Bitcoin - Dividends
Monero - Privacy
OmiseGo - Platform
BinanceCoin - Exchange

Hits all the main categories for 2018 and available on most exchanges. I realize there are more than one coin per category, feel free to swap out as you see fit. For example, Pivx, Verge, Zcash, and Bitcoin Private are all privacy coins. This portfolio will require more attention than the Coinbase portfolio, especially if you find a new coin in a specific category that you notice.

Long Hodl - High Risk, High Reward

Rules are disregarded and replaced with #YoloSwag

AirSwap Token - Exchange coin for the Airswap decentralized exchange
IOTA - Coin used to integrate with the internet of things
Tronix - New coin/platform, establishing new entertainment network on blockchain
NewYork Coin - Dogecoin fork, specializing in merchants in New York City
Dogecoin - Original meme coin: such currency, how moon, much surprise, wow
Paccoin - Focusing on user friendliness and efficiency
Dragon Chain - Platform coin that originated at Disney, cultivating incubator blockchain projects
Basic Attention Token - Integrates with the Brave Browser, used to incentivize content creators in lieu of ad revenue
