An Overview of MegaCryptoPolis

MegaCryptoPolis is a new city building game reminiscent of SimCity. The immediate difference being the incorporation of the Ethereum blockchain and it’s use in the purchase of in-game assets as well as paying in-game taxes and the receiving of tax payouts. The purpose of this game as noted on page 21 of the White paper is, “The main objective is to occupy an advantageous position on the map and build accordingly to the situation. Another strategy is building something to reduce the influence of your neighboring players. This will also help increase your share in tax budget distribution, as you will have a competitive advantage over other landowners.”

As of May 21, 2018, the game is currently in its first stage of what they have labeled Lands Pre-order. At this point building of any kind is not available, only the purchase of spare/individual land blocks. Stage 2 is tentatively set to begin in Summer of 2018 and stage 3 which they have labeled “Enhancements” notes as Late 2018.

Regarding price the white paper states, “The minimum initial price of land in any given field varies between 0.01-0.015 ETH, with the last block of land in the 5×5 field costing up to 7.5 ETH.”, currently reviewing the game field however as many open blocks have been purchased the cheapest I was able to locate was for 0.353260318565368652 ETH, or $205.08 USD as of the time of writing this article.

With that stated we are talking some serious change to even step into the field. This is definitely a high risk / hopefully high reward game. Especially as if the game fails or shuts down for any reason you may lose all invested Ether as dutifully noted on page 25 of the 26 page white paper. Outside of the risk of total collapse, however, there are other risks. As noted previously the actions of other players can have negative effects on you holdings value. Also, there is the issue of Taxes.

As with the real world, taxes are a part of every action taken in-game. Building, upgrading, destroying what you have built or just buying new land, taxes will be paid on all of it. Taxes collected will be allocated into two buckets a Regional Budget, and a Federal Budget. These Budgets are then distributed amongst players based on their total influence points for that game cycle (24hours). With that stated it appears that the portion of taxes labeled Maintenance Cost will be provided to the producers of the game.

Lands appear to fall into 3 main categories. Land that can be built on, land that has resources, and land that cannot be purchased. Land that can be built on (meadows and grass) are able to be turned in to Residential, Office, Commercial, Utilities, Mining, Production, Energy, or Parks each with their own costs, effects, and interactions with other building types. Each of these buildings can be upgraded up to a maximum of level 5 with each upgrade affecting the amount of influence the property generates. Land that cannot be built on will be Resources and will gain influence not from being upgraded but from each mining building around it within a 3×3 field.

Lastly, there is the issue of the Bounty Campaign currently underway which started on May 7th, 2018 and will continue until the beginning of Stage 2 this summer. According to the notes, “A limited amount of spare land blocks for “Bounty Island” will be distributed between all participants of the Bounty Campaign to incentivize the community. Rewards are determined randomly, depending on the amount of Scores each participant possesses.” They then state that players may increase their odds of being randomly selected by involving themselves in one of the following.
