The initiative of Societe Generale, an investment bank in France, to issue a security token-like bond in which it was both the issuer and sole investor might seem a pointless act but taking a closure look it seems to be a start of a permissionless blockchain use case within an industry that initially thought that it was unworkable for them.

There are several reasons why the banking industry feels this way, from a regulatory compliance perspective to competitiveness concerns that are not easily attained in a permissionless blockchain environment.

While it is not yet clear why the 19th largest bank in the world conducted this pilot one thing is for sure, banks cannot afford to turn their back on the disruptive threats and opportunities posed by permissionless protocols such as Bitcoin or Ethereum.

The evolution of the internet serves as an important lesson that could help us peak to the possible outcome of public and private distributed ledger technology.

It had become clear that public, open, interoperatible internet had beaten private and closed intranets of early days of the internet.

It has become apparent that that internet’s open, global system proved superior because it imposed no limit on network size, enable a global developer talent pool of unlimited size and collective brainpower.
