Hackers steal $60m from Japanese cryptocurrency exchange

Another incident of stealing cryptocurrencies has occurred in Japan, creating panic among the investors and traders in the country.

News agency Reuters reports that cryptocurrency exchange Zaif’s parent company Tech Bureau has revealed that hackers have stolen digital coins worth $60 million.

In a statement it said that the incident took place from abroad for two hours on September 14 but the matter came to their notice on Sept 17.

The cryptocurrencies that were stolen included bitcoin, bitcoin cash and monacoin.

Reuters report says:

“Of the $59.67 million stolen (6.7 billion yen), almost $20 million (2.2 billion yen) belonged to parent company Tech Bureau, while $40 million (4.5 billion yen) belonged to clients of the exchange.”

Tech Bureau said it would pay back its affected customers, but the deal is still pending.

Another bitcoin exchange, Coincheck, lost $530 million through hacking in January, for which the scrutiny of Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA) was criticised.
