Preparing the community for bad climate change with cryptocurrency economy

Hi everybody,

My name is Mauriek Putranta, officer in charge  for Project management of "Climate Futures and Rural Livelihood Adaptation Strategies" in Nusa Tenggara Barat Province, Indonesia, in short we call it CCAP (Climate Change Adaptation Project). The project was a collaboration between CSIRO-AusAID alliance, NTB Government Task Force and various scientist from Mataram University.

Some of our project output:

    ◆◆     Design of a participatory, multi-stakeholder scenario planning  method which identifies livelihood systems most vulnerable to future  change, and locally appropriate adaptation strategies
    ◆◆     Recommendations for improving adaptation and food security applied  by the Government of Indonesia, UN World Food Programme, NTB Provincial  Climate Change Task Force, Central Lombok District and Eco Solutions  Lombok.

We prepare the communities to adapt to any change that come from the effect of changing climate, as an archipelago country, our community have been already facing tough challenge, rain season have changing and make it difficult for agricultural community to plan, our fisherman community must endure different ocean season and it impact their income. The changing of climate in the past few decades have also change our livelihood in many ways and our communities must adapt to survive future changes.

Cryptocurrency economy

The adaptation strategies from the result of our research will require approach not only from scientifically inputs but also from economics view, many of our community members are the unbanked, without access to any traditional financial institution, without bank account or even without access to documents and tools to create a normal bank account. They forced by the condition to conduct cash transaction only, sometimes with other party that have more knowledge and power to control the cash flow in certain area and certain commodity, this condition gave the community less choice and ultimately less income for them.

This problem give us an idea to use a decentralized digital currency, a currency that free from power and interfering from certain party, provide the community the tools to act as their own bank, make faster and safe transaction for their commodity and transfer the capital and funds directly between community members without the need of middleman and their costly service. Bitcoin and few other alternative coins are perfect candidate for testing and initial implementation, in future we plan to use bitcoin as the main currency, Syscoin for their decentralized marketplace feature to build localized market and few other altcoin and cryptocurrency startup for various support feature needed for a complete economic system to work.

The problem of implementing cryptocurrency based economies are the cryptocurrency system are alien and foreign for almost everybody, and specifically in NTB area it must be able to answer many questions from culture and religion point of views before it can be accepted as alternative strategies to improve their livelihood. 

Thus for that reasons we created Bitsharia project the commercial project that collect data and inputs from local wisdom and community culture/religion leaders and use the data/inputs as base information to build infrastructure and systems needed to implement cryptocurrency economy from the remote villages to the greater district.

Hopefully, by designing the cryptocurrency economic system from the scratch, tailored specifically for each community, can finally help them to overcome difficulties created by climate changes and allow them to adapt their livelihood in the future.
