Psychology wise, it's a toss up, does the child have his back to mother because he feels safe with her behind him, or have the mother in front so he can see her?
I'd vote facing mother, because at that age hopefully hasn't yet learned to fear what behind him that he can't see.
The real mother is the one who's at the spa while she hired the one on the right #2 to babysit!
